A Great Celebration of Inspiring Work!

While we certainly missed being together in person, the 12th Annual Leadership in Sustainability Awards Presentation was a great success, and left us feeling inspired and connected. Thanks to everyone who joined us to showcase our wonderful winners and connect with the community. County Supervisors John Gioia, Diane Burgis, Karen Mitchoff, and Candace Andersen were there to recognize all the honorees, and our Visionary Partner Central San presented their Pollution Prevention Awards along with our Benefactor Partner Contra Costa County Green Business Program recognized new and re-certified green businesses.

Make sure you join us on October 28th for a "Sustainability LIVE" episode that features all of our Rising Star winner and finalists - young people taking positive action!

Filtering Out Bad Air Days

As the coronavirus, wildfires, and dramatic heat waves continue to jeopardize public health, what can we do at home to limit the impact of poor air quality while giving a nod to sustainability?

The Importance of Ventilation
The wildfires are still not 100% contained and although the skies are bluer than they were in our area, we can't gauge air quality just by sight or smell. You can check the Air Quality Index (AQI) here. (Six categories range from 0 - 500, from "good" to "hazardous." Any number up to 50 is "Good.") Compounding poor air quality with the coronavirus is of particular concern as people start congregating more in gyms, schools, restaurants, etc. Studies indicate the coronavirus is primarily transmitted though air, and not just through large droplets sailing through the air. Visualizing the aerosolized, airborne virus as cigarette smoke will give you an idea for how difficult it is to contain and dissipate once it's out there. (Source) This is where filtration and ventilation come into play. Using HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters in ventilation systems bumps up your protection, especially for those who suffer from asthma or allergies. See this WebMD slideshow for health effects of air pollution.

Air Conditioning
Air conditioners automatically filter air, but if you don't have AC at home, there are some simple things you can do to help keep out smoke or other particulate matter...

Take the Pledge for Cleaner Air!

This past month, we all experienced an eerie day when the sun never seemed to rise, the sky was orange, and particles of ash floated through the air. As Contra Costa County residents, we all want to be safe in our homes with our families and enjoy the natural places the County has to offer. Wildfires raging throughout California have reminded us of the importance of air quality, especially for essential workers in agriculture and healthcare.

You can learn more about air quality and how to improve it with a free virtual event on October 3rd celebrating California Clean Air Day.

Take the Clean Air Pledge with us and earn a prize! Join Sustainable Contra Costa, the City of Antioch, and special guests to learn about the importance of air quality in our communities and the actions we can take to protect it. This free, virtual event is open to all Contra Costa residents and will take place on October 3rd from 10-11:30 a.m. REGISTER HERE.
Top 10 Things to Know About Voting This Election

We are at a critical point in time to vote for leaders who will take action on climate change. A few reminders about the 2020 election:

  1. The deadline to register online to vote is Monday, October 19. Register here or check your voter registration status here.
  2. No one in California needs to request a mail-in ballot. This year, every registered voter is receiving one whether they requested it or not. Ballots are being mailed Oct 5.
  3. No postage is necessary on the ballot envelope. Remember to sign the outside of the envelope.
  4. The last day to mail your ballot is on Election Day, November 3rd; it must be postmarked before 8 pm.
  5. If you prefer to drop off your ballot, you can do so at a secure ballot drop-box, polling location, or the county elections office. There will be 37 secure drop-box sites in Contra Costa County, and ballots are taken by election officials daily to the elections office.
  6. If you decide you want to vote in person on Election Day itself, you must bring your mail-in ballot with you...
Sustainable Leaders in Action

Sustainable Leaders in Action, or SLIA, is the newly formed youth leadership branch of Sustainable Contra Costa that is entirely led by local high school and college students.. SLIA works to promote the Cleaner Contra Costa Platform and to educate youth on how to live a more sustainable lifestyle. The team is organizing several programs, including an e-newsletter to educate the community on what's going on in today's world. Enjoy SLIA's October newsletter

Register for Sustainability LIVE on October 28th, featuring FIVE youth award winners and finalists!
Over the past few years, West Coast residents have experienced the growing threat of climate change in our own lives. Climate change has led to more severe--and frequent--extreme weather events like wildfires. Fires across multiple states have forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes. We, as individuals, can join with others to demand more of our elected representatives to address climate change. On September 22nd, 40 Contra Costa residents called into the Board of Supervisors meeting to support the Climate Emergency Resolution. Joined by over 800 residents who signed the online petition, they motivated the Supervisors to unanimously approve the resolution.

We can also act as individuals to take climate action in our own homes. Did you know that 40% of annual greenhouse gas emissions in the United States come from five basic household activities? Join the Cleaner Contra Costa Challenge to use step-by-step Action guides and local resources to save water and energy in your home...

The Beginning of the End for Gas-Powered Cars?

California will be the first state to mandate 100% zero-emission vehicles by 2035, joining 15 countries that have also committed to phasing out gas-powered cars. This bold, unprecedented executive order by Governor Gavin Newsom will require all new cars sold to be zero-emission within 15 years. The governor emphasized that this decision would not prohibit Californians from owning gas-powered cars or buying or selling used ones. The phase-out process will take years to complete, but the ban's advocates say it is crucial in fighting the effects of global warming and will bring more green jobs to the state. Read the L.A. Times article.
