Sometimes, the perfect business location isn't just a smart real estate choice—it is a homecoming. When Carrie Goodwin opened Salt & Soul in New Boston, New Hampshire, on October 11, 2025, she felt an inexplicable, peaceful pull toward space in the historic building that had once been the local post office and is now Dodge’s Store. Intrigued by the property, she began digging into its history. To her shock, she discovered that her great-great-grandparents, the Atwoods, originally owned the building in the 1800s. The coincidences didn't stop there. Carrie’s mother shared a family history book published by a descendant in 1909. Turning to page 136, Carrie found her exact name printed in the text—a surreal validation that she was exactly where she was meant to be.
Today, Salt & Soul is a thoughtfully curated wellness studio designed as a calm, supportive space to slow down, reset, and care for the body. For Carrie, the business was created from a deeply personal place. Her background was rooted in corporate operations, logistics, and event management. However, after experiencing a brain injury in 2019, Carrie began exploring holistic wellness to aid her recovery. In 2024, she visited a salt cave and was amazed by the physical relief and mental clarity it provided. Inspired to bring this accessible healing to others, she decided to open her own space.
Transitioning from corporate America to a first-time business owner is a daunting leap. In January 2025, Carrie reached out to SCORE and was paired with volunteer mentor Gregory Wortman. "He really helped me build my confidence and just stay strong through it all," Carrie recalled. "There are so many moments where you're like, 'Am I doing this for real? Can I do this?' And in times when I didn't have that belief in myself, he believed in me."
With Greg’s guidance, Carrie honed her business model. Instead of building a traditional, time-consuming salt cave, she opted for a highly efficient halotherapy booth. Halotherapy is a natural, non-invasive treatment where a machine called a halogenerator breaks pharmaceutical-grade salt into tiny particles and disperses them into the air. As clients inhale the dry salt aerosol, it acts as a sponge, drying out excess mucus and reducing inflammation.
While traditional salt rooms require 30 to 45 minutes, Carrie's supercharged booth offers a spa-like reset in just 10 to 15 minutes. This efficiency makes wellness accessible for busy professionals and parents who don't have hours to spare. The response has been incredibly diverse. While her primary demographic consists of women in their mid-thirties, Carrie has treated clients ranging from a six-month-old baby battling RSV to individuals in their 80s. Beyond halotherapy, Salt & Soul has expanded to include Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) grounding mats to help reset the nervous system, as well as targeted red light therapy to support skin health and muscle recovery.
As her client base grows—drawing visitors from surrounding communities and even tourists passing through from out of state—Carrie is already planning her next steps with SCORE’s help. She currently balances the demands of her thriving studio with a full-time job at the New Boston Highway Department. Yet, her vision for expansion remains clear.
Greg and Carrie recently discussed innovative growth strategies, such as leasing her current single-person salt booth to another wellness center to fund a larger, multi-seat booth for families. She is also working on moving the red light and PEMF therapies into dedicated private rooms. Looking further ahead, Carrie envisions creating a mobile salt therapy camper to bring relief directly to smaller towns in NH and also for small groups – like families and potentially transforming the vacant upstairs of the historic building into a community gathering area for local artists and sound bowl healing.
Salt & Soul isn't about fixing anyone; it is about offering support, calm, and space to heal without pressure or pretense. Under the guidance of SCORE and fueled by a deep connection to her family's past, Carrie Goodwin has created a modern sanctuary that truly lives up to its motto: Breathe Easier. Sleep Better. Feel Renewed.
