Summer 2021
Small Business News & Events For You
Welcome to our first quarterly newsletter!

Our SCORE SC Lowcountry team is excited about opportunities such as this to further our support of our communities’ small businesses and non-profit organizations, and to help them succeed.

Like many of our clients, we have emerged from the challenges of the last 15 months with many valuable learnings, including the importance of teamwork, resilience and innovation. It has been our privilege to partner with our clients in navigating the many pitfalls of the pandemic. We have been both inspired and energized by the many Lowcountry small business owners’ determination to ‘survive and thrive’.

The economic impact of SCORE’s involvement during 2020 across the country is significant—over 45,000 new businesses started, with more than 74,000 new non-owner jobs created. SCORE offers free and confidential mentoring to small businesses. We are here to help through the life of your business.

In fact, we can’t say it much better than one of our recent chapter clients, who shared the following: “The SCORE [SC Lowcountry] people I have interacted with are superb and are only concerned about my best interest. I am delighted with the quality of people I have encountered.”

As many small businesses tried new approaches, so did our SCORE team — including our Social Media / Marketing and Education teams, led by certified mentors Joyce Wallace, Mary Ann Bell and Ellen Maloney, respectively. The importance of providing consistent, valuable digital content is here to stay. Please connect with us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube or Twitter.

That said, we look forward to the return of in-person meetings, and figuring out how to execute hybrid approaches as well.

SCORE Lowcountry is also delighted to be launching our ‘Minority Small Business Support Program’ in Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton and Colleton counties. We are partnering with many community leaders and look forward to the positive impact this initiative can potentially provide to minority business owners. Stay tuned!

This kind of significant community impact is made possible by the commitment of our outstanding SCORE volunteers, and I’m pleased that so many new people have brought their energy and expertise to our team. To find out more about becoming a volunteer, please go to https://www.score.org/volunteer.

All the best,

SCORE Lowcountry Chapter Chair
Michelle Gaston to Spearhead Chapter’s New Minority Small Business Support Program

The SCORE SC Lowcountry Chapter is starting a new minority small business support initiative. The new program will help small businesses in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper counties apply for grants to help with direct operating costs.

New SCORE mentor Michelle Gaston is spearheading this initiative. Appearing with fellow mentor Mike Waters on WHHI’s North of the Broad program (link here), Michelle, a retired federal budget officer with expertise in budgeting and financial management, was drawn to SCORE to help small business owners organize and present their finances to successfully apply for loans and grants.

“What we’re trying to do is level the playing field, and offer small businesses the opportunity to receive grants that usually range from $500 to $2,500,” Michelle explained. “Sometimes that small lift is enough to keep these businesses afloat, or to get them going.” Read more
Mentoring for Success

Workshop education and seminar training has always been elemental to SCORE’s system and is now imperative.

One appreciative recipient of SCORE’s dedication is Jennifer Megliore, who recently celebrated 20 years as owner of her artisan gift store, ArtWare, in Shelter Cove Towne Centre.

Jennifer and her SCORE SC Lowcountry mentor, John Ferrara, were recently profiled in Hilton Head Monthly. Read more

Help Make Dreams Come True.

Every year, SCORE volunteers help thousands of entrepreneurs start small businesses and achieve new levels of success in their existing businesses. Volunteering at SCORE is a way for you to give back to your community, connect with fellow business owners, and pass on your knowledge and expertise to the next generation of entrepreneurs in your community.
SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals through education and mentorship. We have been doing this for more than 50 years.

Because our work is supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration, and thanks to our network of 10,000+ volunteers, we are able to deliver our services at no charge. Learn more about SCORE.
