Welcome to Fall,
We have had a great start to the year. Homecoming was amazing. We had a lot of fun and made a lot of noise in the gym. This year’s competitions were designed by the Student Council and they were a lot of fun! See the pictures below. On Saturday, September 29, we had our first ever all school Homecoming celebration. The boys’ and girls’ soccer teams had matches along with a Force football game against Minneapolis Southwest. We finished the night with girls’ volleyball. I’m sure the cooler weather had an impact on attendance, but the day was a great way to get all families at Prep to come out and have some fun.
Thank you to Student Council, along with Mr. Brown, for also organizing a great Homecoming Dance to close out the week. I think everyone was exhausted by the end and ready to get back into the routine.
I also wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who donated in response to my Upper School Parent Marathon letter. Your contributions have made a huge impact on the fund-raising effort, which is clear as we have surpassed our goal early this year. I thank you all for your support of our school.

College Admission Season
The excitement (and pressure) of the college admission season is underway for members of our senior class! Every student moves at a different pace, but it should be noted that the very first firm admission deadlines that many seniors must meet is
November 1
.
Mr. Williams
will be making a concerted effort to meet with all seniors to assist them in clarifying and solidify their application plans. Please contact him with any questions or concerns you have.
For parents of seniors, you may want to turn your attention to college financing. The
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
can be completed starting October 1. The FAFSA is
the
form to complete if you would like your student to be eligible for federal and state grants, loans and work-study (a job on campus). You can learn more and get the process started at
www.fafsa.ed.gov
.
College Visits
I hope that all students -- but particularly seniors and juniors -- will take advantage of the MEA break to explore colleges! Arrangements for a college visit can be made by telephone or by visiting the websites of the schools of interest to you. Get out there and explore!

Lower School/Upper School Buddies
|
|
For the past four years, Mrs. Maakestad’s and Mr. Haselberger’s advisories have been buddies with Mrs. Reuter’s kindergarteners.
It is a bitter sweet year for these seniors who have had a Kindergarten buddy since they were freshmen. These bonds are so important for both buddies as they work together throughout the year, sharing stories, reading, playing games, writing letters to each other and doing craft activities. This is just one great example of our character and leadership in a K through 12 school.

Meningococcal Vaccine
This vaccine protects against meningitis. It is required before entry into 7th grade and a booster dose is usually given at age 16 and the Minnesota Immunization Law requires it before the start of 12th grade. The Health Office did notify families this summer of this requirement. It is not a new requirement but the state is catching up and starting to follow the law. Please check with your healthcare provider or on ParentVue to see if your Senior has had 2 meningococcal vaccines. Do not rely on it saying "compliant" or "noncompliant". Because the state is just starting to require the booster the software system still recognizes students with one vaccine as being "compliant". Please let the Health Office know the month/day/year of the booster dose so we can properly record it and be compliant with the law. Completing an exemption, either medical or conscientious objection, also makes a student compliant with the law. Medical exemptions require a physician signature and conscientious objections require notarization. You can find a form for this on the SCPA website About Us>Health Services>Immunizations>Student Immunization Form. All forms should be brought directly to the Health Office. Contact
Candace Westlund
, Licensed School Nurse, if you have any questions or concerns.
Pertussis and Influenza
There have been reports of cases of pertussis (whooping cough) in the community. If you have a prolonged cough (more than 2 weeks) that is severe, especially if it ends in vomiting, see your healthcare provider. Ask them to consider testing for pertussis as it is often missed during cold and flu season.
There have also been reports of influenza. Consider getting your flu shot now. Review proper handwashing and covering your cough as these are the best ways to help prevent the spread of disease.
If you are diagnosed with pertussis, or treated for possible pertussis, or influenza please notify the Health Office.
Wellness Policy Committee
We will be having a meeting of the Wellness Policy Committee on Thursday, October 11 at 8:15 AM - 9:15 AM in the Main Office Conference room. The committee is open to any stakeholder to join (student, staff, parent, community member). See the SCPA website (About Us>Health Services) for the policy, last year's action plan and the committee meeting minutes. We will be discussing the 2018-19 goals at the meeting. Let the
SCPA Nurse
know if you would like to be a member of the committee.
