Celebrating Univision San Diego's Emmy Award

Last winter, Univision San Diego and Veronica Guzman aired a special segment on Alzheimer's disease and caregiving in the Spanish-speaking community, "Alzheimer: Cuando llega el olvido". This piece highlights the difficult reality of caring for a loved one, and how organizations like SCRC can offer support.

This month, "Alzheimer: Cuando llega el olvido" won an Emmy for Best Human Interest at the 2025 Pacific Southwest Emmys! SCRC would like to thank Univision San Diego and Veronica Guzman for bringing attention to the struggles and triumphs of family caregivers in San Diego, and for encouraging caregivers to seek support through SCRC's free services.

Are you wondering how SCRC can guide you or a loved one along your caregiving journey? June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month! Alzheimer’s impacts more than memory—it changes daily routines, relationships, and futures. As a caregiver, you may be facing overwhelming decisions, emotional shifts, and an ever-evolving landscape. It’s a heavy load—but you’re not in this alone.

In this podcast episode, Roberto and Martha chat with Dr. Paula Desplats, an associate professor at UCSD who is currently researching the role of circadian alterations that trigger neuronal death in Alzheimer's disease. CareCloud: Advice from SCRC's Team of Experts

Many families schedule their travel plans for the summer season. How can caregivers prepare to leave their loved one in the care of a fellow relative or a care professional when they go on vacation? What steps can they take to reduce stress?

It is crucial to create and review a plan ahead of time, whether your care receiver will be looked after for by a relative or by a care professional. To ensure a smooth transition, caregivers should communicate clearly with the individual who will be providing support. This may include:

  • Sharing medical information like diagnoses; medication names, dosage, and schedule; physician name and contact information; location of the nearest urgent care and emergency clinic
  • A written schedule of your loved one's daily routine, including suggestions for soothing activities in case of distress or difficult behaviors
  • A list of emergency contacts, as well as your household emergency plan

Preparing a written guide can help reduce confusion and maintain consistency for your loved one. It is also helpful to introduce the temporary caregiver ahead of time, allowing the care receiver to become familiar and comfortable with them.

Caregivers can reduce their own stress by double-checking arrangements before departure and scheduling availability for phone or video check-ins during the duration of the vacation.

SCRC also offers an extensive virtual library of caregiving resources to guide you along your journey, and to help you care for your loved one during the summer season. I recommend consulting the following free, easy-to-access resources:
