ABOUT SCREENAGERS "UNDER THE INFLUENCE"

Join Screenagers filmmaker Delaney Ruston as she picks up her camera once more to examine the impact of our digital age on teens' decision-making in relation to substances such as vaping, drugs, and alcohol. Exploring the latest research and learning more about the personal experiences of teens and families, the film highlights the changing landscape of the substances themselves, offering solutions for how we can best empower teens as they face decisions about what they will and will not be influenced by. This is a FREE movie paid for by Step Up Anderson Township to educate parents and teens about the influence of screens and drugs on our student population.

Our children are being conditioned from early ages by screens!

Today, I am sharing data about drug use and teens. As I have stated in multiple ways, be it film, past blogs, and podcasts, the intersection of screen time and teens' attitudes and decisions around substance use is profound. Given the bombardment of substance-promoting messages online, we do a great service when we spend time discussing substances with our youth.-Delaney Ruston, M.D. https://www.thescreenagersproject.com/

If you think screens haven't taken over so many kids lives

THINK AGAIN!!

Spending a large amount of time on their devices can hijack developing brains and easy access to drugs and alcohol can lead to addiction.

How Can I help My Teen?

Talk to Your Teen-They listen!!

https://www.samhsa.gov/talk-they-hear-you

Research suggests that one of the most influential factors when a teen is growing up is a strong, open relationship with a parent or caregiver.

Use these tips to talk with your teen:

  • Check in frequently to see how they are doing;
  • Choose informal times to talk, such as in the car, during dinner, or while watching TV;
  • Be clear and consistent about your expectations regarding vaping and other substance use;
  • Establish family agreements together for social and extracurricular activities;
  • Let them know you care and are always there for them; and
  • Continue talking with your teens as they get older.
  • Help your teen create an “exit plan” in case he or she is offered an e-cigarette or faced with a difficult decision about vaping(such as texting a code word to a family member). Peer pressure can be powerful, so coming up with realistic action steps
  • and practicing them together in a safe environment will prepare and empower your teen to make good choices when it matters.
