State Charter Schools Approved for Gwinnett, Northwest Georgia Communities
The State Charter Schools Commission of Georgia (SCSC) Board of Commissioners voted to approve charter petitions for two new startup charter schools at its board meeting on July 30, 2025. Both schools are scheduled to open in Fall 2026.
The Meliora School will become the first 6th-12th grade charter school in Gwinnett County, offering students an individualized mastery-based education that emphasizes project-based learning in entrepreneurship and computer science.
Northwest Georgia Charter Academy will become a community-focused K-12 school in Cave Spring and the first charter school in the region. The petition follows the closure of Cave Spring Elementary School and years of planning by the community. Students will learn through hands-on, project-based learning, including financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and civic responsibility.
The SCSC received 14 startup charter school petitions in FY2025, and nine petitioners participated in capacity interviews. SCSC staff, with the feedback from panelists, make recommendations to the SCSC Board of Commissioners to approve or deny petitions, and commissioners vote upon those recommendations.
The SCSC currently has 50 operational state charter schools in the 2025-26 school year. With these new approvals, the SCSC will have 56 state charter schools authorized for Fall 2026, including four previously approved schools: Dominion Purpose Academy (Columbus), Fayette Classical Academy (Fayette County), Movement School – Athens (Clarke County), and The Wright Community School (location to be determined). Over 38,000 students were enrolled last spring in state charter schools in Georgia.

| | Local School Districts Approve Charter Schools | | Local school districts have approved two new charter schools after seven years without a new locally-authorized charter school in Georgia. Both schools are scheduled to open in Fall 2026. | |
The Richmond County Board of Education approved its first charter school at a meeting on July 22, 2025. Georgia Discovery Charter Academy, a 4th-8th grade school, will serve students in Augusta. The school plans to infuse the learning environment with outdoor learning, animal therapy, art therapy, and STEM programs to offer students an innovative educational opportunity.
On June 2, 2025, the Clayton County Board of Education approved a replication of Tapestry Public Charter School, which currently operates in DeKalb County. Tapestry serves students through an inclusive, personalized model designed to support both neurotypical and neurodivergent learners. The schools will participate in the Replication and Expansion Cohort Program, funded by Georgia’s CSP State Entity Grant.
The Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education approved the district’s first new charter school since 2017 at its August 13, 2025, meeting. REACH Public Schools will serve 9th-12th grade students through a flexible, blended learning model designed to support students who struggle in traditional school settings and need personalized pathways to earn their high school diploma.
These approvals follow the passage of Senate Bill 82 during the 2025 legislative session. The bill addresses Georgia's charter school access challenges by incentivizing local school districts to approve more charter schools and holding districts accountable when they repeatedly deny high-quality charter petitions.
