SCSOS Community Update: April 2022

A Message from Superintendent Reusser

I want to begin this new month by thanking everyone for trusting me with another four years as Sutter County Superintendent of Schools. I am honored to have the faith, support and confidence of Sutter County voters to serve as your Superintendent again. My motto is simple... Kids first! Every day!

Over the past four years, we have done just that. Since 2019, we have increased our grant monies, expanded our Career Technical Education programs, purchased the Sutter County Career Training Center, increased our Student Support and Outreach staff who provides support to foster and homeless youth, as well as social and emotional support services to districts, and much more.

It's with this attitude I plan to bring more change and growth over the next four years to better our students, districts and community. However, all of this change would not be possible without the hard work of each and every member of the Sutter County Superintendent of Schools team. I wish I could name all 388 of you to let you know your work is seen and valued, but that's a lot of employees....So truly, thank you all for an amazing four years; I can't wait to see everything we accomplish in the next four to come!

New Superintendent/Principal: Brittan Elementary School District: 2022-2023 School Year:

 Heather Azevedo

Brittan Elementary has hired one of its own to serve as Superintendent/Principal for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year. Heather Azevedo has served for the past nineteen years at Brittan School as 8th grade teacher and reading specialist.

Born and raised in Live Oak, Heather graduated from Live Oak High School and continued her education at CSU, Chico. She earned her BA in Liberal Studies, her MA in Education with an emphasis in reading and literature, and her multiple subjects teaching credential. She completed her student teaching at Sycamore Middle School in Gridley and was hired as an 8th grade teacher for Brittan Elementary School once she completed her student teaching. She earned her administrative credential from CSU, Chico in 2018.

Heather credits her mentor, Superintendent/Principal Staci Kaelin, with supporting her in her educational career and pushing her out of her comfort zone. “I’m so grateful for Staci,” Heather said. “She knew where I was going before I headed in that direction.”

Heather said that the overwhelming support she has received from her colleagues, parents and the community has been a treasure to her. She didn’t know how everyone would react when she was named the new Superintendent/Principal; the response has been humbling.

“I’m thoroughly excited and ready to embrace this new adventure,” Heather said. She also expressed appreciation for Lisa Shelton, Superintendent/Principal of Franklin School and Ryan Robison, Superintendent/Principal of Sutter Union High School for their support during this transition.

Heather and her husband, Joe, have two boys, ages 17 and 14. Both boys are involved in 4-H and FFA at Sutter Union High School. As a family, they enjoy camping, hiking and spending time at their home in Almanor.

AeroSTEM students attend 'Women In Aviation' conference in Nashville!

Four Sutter County high school students attended the International Women In Aviation conference in Nashville with the help of scholarships granted by the Northern California Aerospace Initiative, an Aerospace Company located right here in Yuba City. Two students from River Valley High School and two from AeroSTEM Academy, Claire Giles and Destiny Johnston.

Claire said she found her love for aviation in the 4th grade when she learned about Amelia Earhart. I am intrigued by how she became a pilot. I admired how she challenged gender norms by becoming a female pilot and flew solo across the Atlantic. I wanted more exposure to aviation,” explained Claire. Claire said she wants to become a private pilot, but is exploring other pathways in aviation.

While Destiny aspires to become an Aeronautical Mechanical Engineer. “I also plan to get a UAS license and my pilot’s license in the future. I am currently learning parts of planes and specific information I need to know well for this profession,” said Destiny. “I am in a group where we are building a plane. We then test and sell the aircraft to profit from the next one. It has been a lot of hard work, and I enjoy every moment of building the plane. I hope to develop the next plane, or if possible, be a mentor.”

Chaperoning the trip was AeroSTEM Academy staff members Tara Taber and Tiffany Chao. Both instructors are passionate about supporting women in the aviation industry.

“I want students to know that there is support out there for women in this industry even though it is such a male dominated industry. There are many groups and support already in place that are helping pave the way for women in this industry. This conference provided connections and leadership ideas for women,” said Tara.

“I want students to know that there is a large community of people who want them to succeed and are willing to go the extra mile to make it happen. I would want them to know that if they have a dream to pursue something, there is a way. For girls who are looking to go into the industry, I want them to know that although sometimes it might feel like you are alone, you are not. Sometimes, you will be the only female and that is okay. There are so many women who have been where you are and who want to be a mentor,” Tiffany explained.

Shady Creek Outdoor School

A message from Shady Creek Director, Christopher Little

aka Yeti:

"I can’t believe that we have come this far and I am positive all of you are to thank. Every single one of you. THANK YOU! You’re making a difference one email at a time, one work order at a time, it doesn’t matter what it is, it ALL matters! I know a lot has been achieved but I promise all of you we’re just getting started! Thank you all for your love, support and patience.

I feel it’s hard to control what a student learns in a week at camp, but how a student feels, that’s real. We can see it, we can feel it and we can relate. Having one kid say “you made me feel included” is life changing. That feeling is so precious and if nurtured, can last beyond a week… maybe a lifetime."

Check out these great letters from some of our students!
