SCSOS Community Update: February 2022

A Message from the Superintendent

Shady Creek Reopening

After Nearly Two Years

After closing its doors in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sutter County Superintendent of Schools announced on December 17, 2021, Shady Creek Outdoor School and Event Center is welcoming back students and guests starting in February 2022.

Visitors to the campus are returning to our same beloved outdoor campus where students will get to experience our beautiful environment up close and personal through nature hikes, learning about our rescue birds in the Raptor Center, discovering how the ecosystem works together and much more.

Following the pandemic, Shady Creek will be implementing new safety protocols for all students and staff on campus. 72 hours prior to departure, schools will be testing students for COVID-19. Some schools may choose to do rapid testing. Unvaccinated staff will be rapid tested every Monday before students arrive on campus. All students and staff must wear masks, unless they are outdoors, eating or sleeping. Prior to each meal, students will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms, including getting their temperature taken. There will be NO co-mingling of cabins; schools will remain with their schools. In the event a student or staff member tests positive for the virus, that person will be immediately sent home and close contacts will be notified.

Also new this year is a new director of the outdoor school, Christopher Little, camp name "Yeti." Little will be replacing Shannon Cueva who is taking a step back from the school to spend time with her family.

"It's time to bring the kids back to the forest," Little said. "We're ready and the kids need it. The joy of walking down a trail, learning about yourself and nature, it's crucial now more than ever. We are overjoyed to be able to offer this to students again."

Over 40 area schools and approximately 2,900 students have committed to attend in 2022.

Shady Creek staff came back on January 24, while students returned Monday, January 31 serving about 40 students from Core Butte Charter and Vina Elementary. The following week kicks off our larger groups with 200 seventh grade students from Corning Unified. We will be serving about 2,900 students over 17 weeks. All staff and students, regardless of vaccination status, will test the day of arrival and safety protocols are in place to ensure every student receives a safe and healthy experience. Director Christopher Little and his team are excited to welcome students back to Shady Creek after being closed for 22+ months. The energy and the passion this team has for the students is remarkable!
