SCTPO Hosts, Supports 2018 Mobility Week Celebratory Events
To celebrate Mobility Week (10/27 - 11/3) the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization joined with local community partners, Brevard Public Schools (official) Legacy Club, The Viera Company, Earth Fare Viera, Aging Matters in Brevard, FDOT Central Florida, and of course, the Brevard Zoo, to host its second annual Senior Stroll event. Attendees learned pedestrian safety tactics and were led on a guided tour of the Linear Park trail, where they encountered Florida's natural elements and beauty.
SCTPO staff also supported multiple Space Coast Area Transit related Mobility Week events including pop-ups events in Melbourne and Cocoa, where staff spoke with transit riders about the importance of safety. Staff also attended the Merritt Island/Cocoa Beach Ride with Jim event where attendees were provided updates on the latest in public transit in Brevard County.
Now Hiring! SCTPO Seeks GIS Transportation Data Analyst
The  Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization  (SCTPO) is currently hiring for the position of the GIS Transportation Data Analyst.

The GIS Transportation Data Analyst is responsible for utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) software to provide a better understanding of transportation data in graphical format. Mapping of datasets will include roadways, transit, bicycle, pedestrian, trails, crashes and travel patterns.

The position will also be involved with maintaining and updating SCTPO documents, such as the Long Range Transportation Plan, Transportation Improvement Program and Congestion Management System. Applicants must be detail orientated and have ability to manage projects from concept to completion.

SCTPO Takes Bicycle Pedestrian Trails Advisory Committee on
Walking Workshop of Complete Streets Project
Photo Feature : On 10/22/18, the SCTPO took its Bicycle Pedestrian and Trails Advisory Committee members on a Walking Workshop of Florida Ave. In the Rockledge section, members observed areas of opportunity on how to improve pedestrian and transit features. In the City of Cocoa Government section, they strolled the revitalized complete street and were able to experience how reconfiguration and strategic planning can help redevelop an area.

Input Needed: Bicycle Pedestrian Master Plan Survey
The  Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization  (SCTPO) is currently in the process of developing the 2018 Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan (BPMP).

The purpose of this plan is to create a connected system of bicycling and pedestrian facilities that serve the needs of Brevard County’s residents and visitors. Help us understand the bicycle, pedestrian, and trail needs of our county. Access the survey  here  or click the image on the right.
Event Spotlight : Looking for a fun-filled Saturday activity? The Coast to Coast Bicycle Company & Playalinda Brewery are teaming up with the East Coast Greenway Alliance for a Bike & Brew on November 17, from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm. Enjoy a 10-mile guided bike ride from the Titusville Welcome Center to the Chain of Lakes Park.

The East Coast Greenway connects 15 states, 450 cities and towns, and 3,000 miles of people-powered trails from Maine to Key West, Florida —the country’s longest biking and walking route. The nonprofit, East Coast Greenway Alliance, works with partners at every level, from federal and regional officials to state committees, local officials, and legions of dedicated volunteers to bring the dream of this 3,000-mile route to life. Nominations Now Open!
2018 Florida School Crossing Guard of the Year
For the 2018 Florida School Crossing Guard of the Year award, three (3) outstanding guards will be chosen from across the state from three (3) different agencies.

You may nominate as many guards as you feel are deserving and meet the criteria. Each nominee will still receive a personal letter and special lapel pin (looks like the S1-1 sign), sent to them via their supervisor. It will not indicate who nominated them, but expresses gratitude for their outstanding service and lets them know they were nominated for this honor.

Winners will be honored on Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, the first Friday in February, February 1, 2019.

I-95/South Palm Bay Interchange Update
Work continues in the southern portion of the county as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), moves toward a completed diverging diamond interchange at I-95approximately 1.5 mile north of Micco Road. The interchange
will improve traffic capacity, operations, and safety in southern Brevard County.

Timely Topic: Last week was a deadly week for kids at the bus stop. Tragedies in Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi and Pennsylvania have drastically changed families and communities across the country. We urge you to drive safely, and remember to be alert and slow down when driving in neighborhoods with school zones. Young lives depend on you driving safely.
SCTPO Safety & Education Coordinator Leads Bike, Ped Safety Community Outreach Session in Cape Canaveral
Kim Smith, the TPO's safety and education coordinator, recently led a Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety education session for Cape Canaveral residents on November 5, 2018.
 
Smith utilized the program WalkWise to test residents' knowledge on bicycle and pedestrian laws. She also provided goodie bags containing helpful and informational materials on the guidelines of bike and pedestrian safety.
SCTPO Tours State-of-the-Art SunTrax Facility
Steve Bostel, SCTPO Transportation Program Manager, recently toured the state-of-the-art SunTrax Facility on November 1, 2018. SunTrax is a 400-acre site with a 2.25-mile multi-lane oval track for high-speed testing, along with a 200-acre infield specifically designed to test and develop automated driving systems.

While the facility is still under construction, it will be a facility where auto manufacturers will be able to test their vehicles in a closed environment, while simulating real world conditions. The facility is slotted to open in 2021.
