Brevard Community Celebrates Opening of
Linear Zoo Trail Extension
On January 12, 2018, the Brevard community held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of phase II of the Brevard Zoo Linear Park Trail.

The highly anticipated trail project now extends the facility, an additional 1.93 miles of boardwalk and asphalt, to Turtle Mound Road in Melbourne.

This community asset was funded via state and federal dollars through the Florida Department of Transportation and the Space Coast TPO. It provides visitors and locals with a total of three miles of ADA accessible trail for cyclists, runners, and walkers to use for recreation, exercise, and transportation.

The Brevard Zoo Linear Park Trail, like so many trail and transportation projects, is a testament to multi-agency cooperation and community support being vital in pushing projects forward. The project would not have progressed thus far if it wasn’t for voter support and cooperation between the Space Coast TPO, Brevard County Board of County Commissioners, Florida Department of Transportation, the Brevard Zoo, and A. Duda & Sons.

Smart Growth America Releases
2019 Dangerous By Design Report
Smart Growth America recently released the 2019 Dangerous By Design report, ranking the Melbourne-Palm Bay-Titusville area as the third most dangerous metro area in the nation for walking. The report ranks states and metropolitan areas around the country using our “Pedestrian Danger Index”, or PDI.

This index measures how deadly it is for people to walk based on the number of people struck and killed by drivers while walking, controlling for the number of people that live in that state or metro area and the share of people who walk to work. The 2019 edition of  Dangerous by Design  includes traffic deaths that occurred between 2008 and 2017 from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), a national database of all fatal traffic crashes.

This report shows that our streets are not getting safer for everyone. We must all do our part as road users to increase the safety of our transportation network.

Kiddos learned all about bike safety by practicing different skills on supervised courses.
