"
We're all in this together. We make each other strong!
Being there for each other, is where we all belong!
"
Dear Southern Door Community,
We all realize that there is no way that remote learning can take the place of a great teacher facilitating learning with a classroom of students, engaged and in collaboration with each other. Many educators, like us, however, know that even though we are trying our very best to focus on essential learning standards, there most likely will be some learning gaps that we will need to address once we return. . .but perhaps there will also be unintended learnings as a result of this unprecedented time, that may end up making us all a little better and stronger.
The following post by Jaime Ragsdale
crossed my desk this week. It causes us to think when she suggests that instead of focusing on the learning gaps, that we think about ways that this group of students may be more ADVANCED in other things in their life.
“. . .What if they have more empathy, they enjoy family connection, they can be more creative and entertain themselves, they love to read, they love to express themselves in writing?
. . .What if they enjoy the simple things, like their own backyard and sitting near a window in the quiet?
. . .What if they notice the birds and the dates the different flowers emerge, and the calming renewal of a gentle rain shower?
. . .What if this generation are the ones to learn to cook, organize their space, do their laundry, and keep a well-run home?
. . .What if they learn to stretch a dollar and to live with less?
. . .What if they learn to plan shopping trips and meals at home?
. . .What if they learn the value of eating together as a family and finding the good to share in the small delights of the everyday?
. . .What if they are the ones to place great value on our teachers and educational professionals, librarians, public servants and the previously invisible essential support workers like truck drivers, grocers, cashiers, custodians, logistics, and health care workers and their supporting staff, just to name a few of the millions taking care of us right now while we are sheltered in place?
. . .What if among these children, great leaders emerge who have had the benefit of a slower pace and a simpler life to truly learn what really matters in this life?
. . .What if in many other ways in their life, they are AHEAD?”
As we continue to work together as staff, families, and community to help our children continue to learn, may we also be reminded to share with them the simple blessings in our lives! Perhaps, even WE, as adults, will be further AHEAD in our growth as individuals and as a community, when this is over. May we be even more Eagle Strong and Eagle Proud than ever before! Be Safe, Stay Healthy, and Happy Easter to each and every one of you!

During a church mission trip to St. Louis,
Abigail Jane Neubauer
, realized how one day of work could have such a positive impact and bring joy to people in need. As a big sister in Big Brothers/Big Sisters, she has been a positive role model to her little for nearly four years. Every week, she is there for her little, whether to shoot hoops or engage in an intensive game of checkers.

|
Amanda Jade Puccini
is a core leader for Edge, a middle school Catholic faith program that helps young people lead happy, healthy lifestyles. By volunteering for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Loaves and Fishes, and the YMCA, she continues to have a positive impact on young people’s lives while assisting adults in need here in Door County and as far away as Missouri and Louisiana.

Through Big Brothers/Big Sisters,
Carissa Bartels
has bettered the life of her little, who struggles with academics, self-care, and relationships with teachers and other students. Every week, they meet to do homework, play games, and talk about life’s struggles. Over the course of four years, her little is able to accomplish goals with a strong and positive self-esteem. Carissa also volunteers at her church, the Haunted Mansion, volleyball clinics, and numerous community events in Southern Door.

Being a tutor, mentor, and volunteer through Big Brothers/Big Sisters has given
Delilah Rose
a new sense of academic clarity. By helping her little develop confidence and grow into a passionate and courageous young girl, Delilah’s optimism has grown, allowing her to engage more deeply in any subject. In 2018, she founded the Southern Door Eagle Pride Newspaper, a student-run paper that focuses on multi-faceted modes of reporting.
