December 30, 2020
Dear Southern Door Community,

Never have I witnessed more desire to bid good-bye to a year, like this year's 2020! We are all hopeful that the New Year will bring the return to less stressful times! Although 2020 brought us challenges that we would rather have not wished on anyone, it did allow many of us personally to develop an appreciation for the simpler things in life, and to change in other ways at home and at work, by experiencing growth, we never thought we could do.

As we go through this historic time as a people, may we be reminded by lessons learned by those experiencing the great Depression. Long after it was over, memories were definitely about survival skills learned, but also the feelings of hope and blessings that they brought to each other! May this new year brings us continued opportunities to be there for each other. We can always do more to warm the hearts of those around us with a smile, an encouraging word, or a thoughtful gesture.

Hereโ€™s to the great start of the 2021 yearโ€”celebrating all the great things that define us, acknowledging each otherโ€™s efforts, rising up to meet the challenges that comes our way, and inspiring those around us as we continue being a school community that is Eagle Proud and Eagle Strong!

Happy New Year!

Chloe LaCrosse, daughter of Jeremy and Tracy LaCrosse, received a $500 State Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) Grant sponsored by Saputo Cheese USA, Inc. Chloe's plan is to improve her herd's genetics through flushing her heifer. She will implant the flushed embryos into recipient cows or heifers in the months of January, June and March so they will calve in a show month of March, September or December.

In December, LaCrosse received a $1,000 National Supervised Agricultural Experience Grant sponsored by California Certified Organic Farmers. Chloe's plan with that grant is to purchase a wagyu heifer calf with hopes to one day practice raising wagyu beef organically.

Southern Door High School to Offer
AP Capstone Diploma Program
Diploma Program Focuses on College-Level Research, Collaboration, and Presentation Skills Crucial for College and Career Success
Southern Door High School is one of approximately 1,800 schools worldwide to implement the AP Capstoneโ„ข Diploma programโ€•an innovative program that allows students to develop the skills that matter most for college success, such as research, collaboration, and communication. The program consists of two courses taken in sequence: APยฎ Seminar and AP Research.

Students who score a 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing earn the AP Capstone Diplomaโ„ข. This signifies outstanding academic achievement and attainment of college-level academic and research skills. Students who score a 3 or higher in both AP Seminar and AP Research (but not on four additional AP Exams) earn the AP Seminar and Research Certificateโ„ข.

The Southern Door Board of Education gave approval on December 15, 2020 for Southern Door to offer the AP Seminar in the fall of 2021. Superintendent Patti Vickman says: โ€œThis innovative program provides opportunities for a broader, more diverse student population ready for college and beyond. The program gives our teachers more leeway with curriculum choices, so their students can access more challenging coursework and sharpen their reading and writing skills. In surveying our students at Southern Door, there was interest by some of our students to be further challenged with a college-level research program.โ€
HS students in Mrs. Baumannโ€™s Personal Finance classes completed a 10-week simulation Budget Challenge on December 3, 2020.  OVERALL, the 38 students finished 13th out of 50 total high school groups across the United States. The Budget Challenge simulates the financial life of a young working adult. The students each built and managed a budget while attempting to achieve key financial goals, and received virtual paychecks and bills in real-time. Students earned points by demonstrating positive financial behaviors such as earning trophies and investing in their 401(k) accounts. Students lost points for negative financial behaviors such as late payments and overutilizing their credit card.
