Dear Southern Door Community,

Sometimes the simplest act of kindness can be the greatest gift that you give a person . . . especially when they are not expecting it. The upcoming Valentine's Day, and then Random Acts of Kindness Day on February 17, are great reminders of the importance of making that extra effort to offer kindness to those around us - in our families, with our friends, to our co-workers, and even strangers. Offering kindness is a focus in many of our classroom conversations this month.

Maya Angelou, one of my favorite poets, says "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. " Thank you for doing your part in sharing kindnesses with those you encounter. That caring connection we bring when interacting with others ripples throughout our community and is the foundation for the "family-like" feeling that is a hallmark of Southern Door Schools.

Lastly, Friday was the 100th day of school. While it has always been a milestone in the elementary school, this year it is a celebration for all of us! We have been in school 100 days when other districts in the region have not. This has been no easy feat! We so appreciate the efforts of all our students, staff, families, and communities to ensure that learning continues to be our focus. Our practicing the recommended protocols of wearing masks, social distancing, checking symptoms, extra cleaning, and if necessary, following quarantines, have all worked together to ensure a healthy & safe learning environment! As a school community, you are showing everyone else that at Southern Door, we rise above the challenges that come our way, and continue to be Eagle Proud and Eagle Strong.

WRESTLER ADVANCES TO STATE
Congratulations to Grant Englebert for advancing to the WIAA State Championships at Wausau East High School next Saturday! Grant becomes just the third 3X state qualifier in Southern Door history!

We are also very proud of Brodie Overbeck who placed 4th, as well as Spencer Slezewski and Trevor Englebert who both placed 6th in the Valders sectional. GO EAGLES!  
BASKETBALL TEAMS ENTER PLAYOFF COMPETITION
The girls' basketball team lost to top-seeded Brillion in the regional semi-finals Friday night. The boys basketball team has their first playoff next Tuesday at home vs Sturgeon Bay. Congratulations to the student athletes and their coaches for being able to play a full season so successfully, during this pandemic time! GO EAGLES!
STATE SWIMMING COMPETITION🏊‍♀️
PROVIDES GREAT FINISH FOR TEAM! 😊
It was truly a great season for the whole team as they competed at WI State Championship Friday night in Waukesha. Coach Jeff Norton said. “It was an honor to coach such great group of young men. They represented Door County with class and sportsmanship and the support from the community and parents was as always amazing.”

Luke Bousley hit the podium with personal best time of 2:02.78 and a 5th place finish in the 200IM and 14th in the 100Free. Jacob Norton was the lone competitor in the 50 Freestyle and came home with a 14th place finish. The 200 Freestyle Relay saw the team of Luke Bousley, Ethan Almstadt, Drew Rass, and Jacob Norton finish in 7th place. The final event of the night for DCU swimmers saw Drew Rass come home in 9th place in the 100 Breaststroke and Jacob Norton post the highest finish of the evening for the team with a Bronze medal finish and 3rd place showing in the 100 Breaststroke. GO DCU!
ELEMENTARY VIRTUAL STEAM NIGHT MARCH 9 - REGISTER NOW!
This year's Elementary Family STEAM Night will be virtual. Families will receive a STEAM kit bag that contains all the materials needed to participate in the LIVE Family STEAM Challenge. Participants will be encouraged to share photos of their end products.

Named Entertainers of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) in 2019, Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers have consistently delivered chart-topping radio hits and energetic performances over the past decade. The Radio Ramblers are seen by tens of thousands of bluegrass fans every year, and since 2013, have become regular guests on the historic Grand Ole Opry.
Their most recent album, For The Record for the Nashville-based label Billy Blue Records, has remained on the charts for a record 13 months and produced multiple Top 10 singles. Additionally, the Mullins produced recording, Industrial Strength Bluegrass for Smithsonian Folkways will be released March 26th, with his band’s first single, “Readin’, Rightin’, Route 23” hitting radio this month. Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers have generated an in-demand following on the national scene, allowing them to be one of today’s most heralded torch-bearers in mainstream bluegrass.

HOW TO SUPPORT THE FIFTH GRADE AND THE CPI TELETHON
For over 40 years, the fifth grade class at Southern Door has fundraised for the CP Telethon through their musical by letter writing. This year, things look a little different.

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR THE "I AM SPORT" AWARD!
The Northeast Wisconsin High School Sports Awards is now taking nominations for the I AM SPORT award, which recognizes student-athletes who give back to their communities through volunteerism. This is your chance to ensure that a deserving student-athlete is recognized for what he or she accomplished in the community, and you can nominate any athlete here! Nominations may be submitted now through March 9 at this link. The voting period starts March 10 at 10 a.m. and concludes April 7.

The Milwaukee Brewers are proud to announce the Grand Slam Teacher of the Month Program recognizing teachers from all grade levels and disciplines who improve student achievement and use innovative strategies. Watching teachers teach during these unprecedented times reminded us how teachers go beyond the call of duty to keep their students engaged and learning -- as the classroom dynamic has dramatically changed and virtual learning has become necessary.
