"It takes a village to educate a child.”

Dear Southern Door Community
"It takes a village to raise a child" is an African proverb that means that an entire community of people must interact with children for those children to experience and grow in a safe and healthy environment. And, more importantly, it takes a village to educate a child. The people our children are around in their everyday lives will affect who our children will grow up to be.

We are so fortunate that we have a community, here in Southern Door, which works as partners with us. Whether you volunteer in special activities, contribute to school fundraisers, present educational programs, are a member of the local Lions Club, building gaga pits, and putting on Halloween festivities (see special event below), just to name a few, each outreach makes a difference in the lives of our children and their families.

This week we would like to extend a special thank you to Justin Veeser from the Brussels-Union-Gardner (BUG) Fire Department, and Kim Starr from the Southern Door Fire Department, for organizing another great Fire Prevention Week presentation for our students in 4K - grade 4. Click on this link to access a video highlighting this unique educational experience by some of our community's emergency personnel.

We appreciate everyone's continued support and partnership with us in the education of our community's children, for it is what makes us Eagle Proud and Eagle Strong!

Patricia Vickman, Superintendent

Griffin Slezewski, senior at Southern Door High School, has been selected by the faculty and members of his class as this year's recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Good Citizen Award. Each year a senior who best exemplifies outstanding qualities of leadership, dependability, service and patriotism in his/her school, home and community is nominated for this award. The sponsor of this award is the Jean Nicolet Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. Griffin is the son of Kevin and Tracy Slezewski.
With the colder weather upon us, we are going to do our test for emergency weather alert earlier this year.

The Southern Door County School District uses Infinite Campus (IC) to send school and district-wide communications. Parents must opt in to which messages they want to receive.  On Tuesday, October 27 at 6 pm, we will send a test to all the communication preferences that parents have selected on Infinite Campus. If you don't receive the message, please call your school office the next day to have them check your notifications.

The following instructions at this  link detail how to review and update your emergency communication contact information and preferences, or you may contact your respective school office for assistance.
Wednesday, October 28th

PreK-12 students and staff may choose to wear fall colors or an appropriate fall/Halloween costume. Please remember that, in line with our school district policies, no weapons (or look-alike weapons) may be part of the costume. Any costumes with themes of violence are also not appropriate. Thus there can be no Scream, Freddy Kruger, etc., nor any other costumes depicting violence, horror, etc., here at school. Minimal makeup is permissible if applied at home before coming to school.
As always, learning and safety are our primary concerns. Please be sure that your child's costume is in good taste, and that it will not be a disruption to the learning environment. You may want to keep in mind the various activities that your child will be involved in, such as recess, gym class, lunch, etc., in planning what they will wear to school that day. As with any other theme day, if a student's clothing causes disruption to the learning process, the student may be asked to remove the costume.
