SDOP Grant Recipient Empowers Youth
A group of teens from Sussex County were the recipient of the 2023 Presbytery of the James Self-Development of People (SDOP) Committee grant. The SDOP committee awarded the group a grant of $7,000 to help youth in their community gain leadership skills and increase their civic engagement. The youth are participants in Empowering Young Leaders (EYL), a program that serves youth in underserved, rural communities in Southeastern Virginia. EYL seeks to educate, enhance, and empower the lives of youth and to help them to become leaders in the communities that they live in.
Serving Migrants? Homeland Security Offers Safety Webinar
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security invites leaders, staff, and volunteers of migrant-serving non-profit organizations to a safety webinar on April 19 at 1:30 p.m. DHS personnel from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Center for Prevention, Partnerships and Programs, and the Office of Intelligence and Analysis will share ways to enhance the safety, security, and resilience of your communities – especially against threats and acts of targeted violence. From bomb threat management to active shooter awareness and personal cyber hygiene, the goal is to equip you and your organization with the knowledge and tools to ensure your safety.
Presbyterian Outlook Celebrates Vitality of Small Churches | Join the Presbyterian Outlook for a webinar celebrating church vitality in small congregations. On April 16, Outlook Editor/Publisher Teri McDowell Ott will convene a panel of voices including Catherine Neelly Burton, Warren Lesane, Shavon Starling-Louis, and Philip Blackburn. Together, the panel will discuss some of the troubles facing small churches, the strengths of these worshipping communities, and practical examples of small churches thinking in creative ways to continue their ministry. This conversation will be followed by a Q&A with audience members who join the live webinar.
Free Membership for Ministers and Musicians in First Call | Ministers of Word and Sacrament and church musicians in their first call are invited to join the Presbyterian Association of Musicians for free. In partnership with PC(USA)’s Financial Aid for Service, PAM is offering up to 70 free 2024 memberships to pastors and church musicians who are serving in their first call.
Attend This Event to Benefit Your Aging Congregation | Ageism--discrimination against older people--is one of the last socially acceptable prejudices, reports the American Psychological Association. On April 18, the presbytery's Older Adult Ministry hosts an event with Dr. Tracey Gendron, chair of Virginia Commonwealth University's Department of Gerontology and director of the Virginia Center on Aging. Learn the biases behind our false understanding of aging and how to create an anti-ageist society. Registration closes soon.
