SDSG NEWS: OUR LOCAL TO GLOBAL IMPACT

Dear friends and colleagues,

I’m delighted to update you on a number of initiatives SDSG has been working on over the last few months. SDSG’s local to global approach is one of the unique qualities of our organization; and we’ve been busy on both fronts.

In Colorado, SDSG has been tracking our state’s compliance with the Clean Air Act. If you want to better understand the Front Range’s smog problems and what you can do to get involved, check out this blog by SDSG Legal Intern Alex Inskeep. In addition, the Colorado legislature passed Clean Heat Targets requiring major investor-owned gas utilities to reduce Green House Gas emissions by 41% in 2035. Yet, Xcel has submitted a Gas Infrastructure Plan (GIP) that would significantly expand its gas network, and would in turn make it all but impossible to meet Clean Heat targets. SDSG Legal Intern Sydney Christian appeared last month before the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to highlight key policy issues the PUC should consider when ruling on the GIP in March this year. Clean Air and Clean Heat for All!

At the global level, we continue to focus our attention on carbon and the climate. The carbon intensity of nickel —a key mineral in batteries as well as stainless steel— remains high in Indonesia. The bauxite/aluminum industry, which is by far the largest so-called energy transition mineral in terms of volume, is failing to adequately disclose its true carbon impact. And the certification standards governing carbon offsets are failing to protect people and the planet. Our new research explains the nuances of these issues and provides pathways for action.

No matter where you are in the world, join us in creating a more sustainable future.

—Brendan Schwartz, SDSG Executive Director

MEET OUR NEW INTERNS
AND SECRETARY OF THE BOARD!

Once again this year, SDSG is proud to welcome interns in its ranks to contribute to our work. Find out more about Syndey, Yudha, Hunter and Faizatu's areas of expertise, and apply here.

We are also delighted to welcome Dr. Shonali Banerjee as our new Secretary of the Board. Shonali is an Assistant Professor of International Development in the Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Warwick (UK). She is also a Visiting Research Fellow at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, and a guest lecturer at University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

SDSG ABOUT TOWN

SDSG colleagues have been organizing events, pursuing further learning, and shaping policy debates at key forums. Here are some highlights of recent activities:

  • In collaboration with the Western Alliance of Reclamation Management (WARM), SDSG President Luke Danielson led a weeklong field course for students and mining professionals to learn about the legacy of abandoned and un-reclaimed uranium mines on Indigenous lands in Navajo country in the Four Corners region of the U.S.

  • SDSG Executive Director Brendan Schwartz co-convened a seminar at the University of Edinburgh with Dr. Thabani Mutambasere on Contemporary Inequalities in the Global South with a focus on the political economy of natural critical minerals. Brendan also guest lectured at Dr. Derrick Hudson’s course at the Colorado School or Mines on the political economy of artisanal cobalt mining in the DRC; and was a panelist at the school’s Futures Event on Critical Minerals and Mining policy.

  • SDSG Legal Intern Maria Guillamont attended New York Climate Week to educate youth about the emergence of deep-sea mining and its risks.

  • SDSG Carbon Research Fellow Bennett Jarvis attended IETA’s North America Climate Summit and side events at New York Climate Week to interview industry players in the nature-based carbon market.

  • Brendan represented SDSG at the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining (IGF)'s Annual conference at the United Nations Office in Geneva. One of the most insightful panels highlighted a new guidebook on Legal Tools for Gender Equality in Critical Minerals Governance.

Verra’s Carbon Standard 5.0: Integrity Through Rights and Benefit-Sharing?

Verra’s updated Verified Carbon Standard aims to rebuild trust in voluntary carbon markets with stronger rules on carbon rights and benefit sharing. But will it drive real change or just limit abuses? Bennett Jarvis examines whether it shifts power to communities or props up a flawed model.

Aluminum: The Hidden Carbon Cost No One Is Talking About

Aluminum is essential to sustainable infrastructure and green technologies, from phone batteries to electric vehicles. But its production can’t be truly “green” until its full climate impact is accounted for. Maria Guillamont explores aluminum’s overlooked environmental footprint—and why it matters now.

SDSG Comments on Xcel Energy's Proposed Gas Infrastructure Plan

Last month, SDSG urged the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to reject Xcel’s Gas Infrastructure Plan, warning it would undermine Clean Heat targets, ignore cost-effective alternatives like heat pumps, and omit required emissions and Social Cost of Carbon analysis.
