A Message from Nancy Skeans, CEO

To Our Dear Clients, Families, and Friends,
From all of us at SDWMA to all of you, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! Thank you for your business, your kindness, your trust, and your support throughout 2021.
This time last year, I was sure that our country (and our world) was on the road to putting COVID-19 permanently behind us. I bet many of you did as well – the news regarding the emergency approval of effective vaccines had already been released, and before 2020 closed, vaccines were going into arms. We knew it would take months, but all we had to do was wait just a little longer. We are now on the verge of 2022, and while we are not as isolated or locked-down as we were in the early months of COVID, we are not yet free from the disease or from its relentless human cost.
If you are feeling a little gloomy about 2021 or just suffering from COVID burnout, take a few minutes to jot down the positives that did occur in 2021. Let me share with you some of the ones we have experienced at SDWMA.
- Our team is back in the office. YEAH! Hybrid working is here to stay and provides greater flexibility to our staff, but the team is in the office together several days each week.
- We are safely meeting you (our clients) in our offices, in your homes, or over a meal in a favorite restaurant.
- If we can’t meet in person, we have all mastered Zoom or Teams so we can meet in person (sort of) with the magic of technology.
- The economy has continued to recover, and that recovery can be seen in positive returns across your portfolios this year.
- Our business continues to grow. This growth is coming from increasing our new client base, increasing the assets we manage for our long-time clients, and increasing our staff.
- On July 1, 2021 we promoted two of our senior advisors to partner: Jason Staley (also was promoted to Chief Investment Officer) and David Brinkman.
- In October, our investment analyst and one time intern, Sean McCann passed level 1 of the Charted Financial Analyst exam.
- In November, we added two new advisors to the individual wealth management team – Senior Advisor, Gregg Daily, and Associate Advisor and Planner, Demetrius Kokales.
- In December, we launched a YouTube channel to help communicate financial updates and planning ideas. (Netflix, here we come?)
- And most importantly, throughout 2021, we continued to build our relationships with you and your families.
While the world may not have stopped COVID-19 in 2021, COVID-19 cannot stop humans from being human – we need to be together, and we need each other to grow stronger.
As the quote above points out, some of the best days of our lives haven’t even happened yet. Hold that wonderful thought close as you spend time with your families and loved ones this holiday season.
We hope that 2022 will be your best year yet!

Beware of the Lurking Ninja Tax
By Sean McCann
|
As we approach the end of the year, investors begin to ponder their taxes ahead of next April’s personal filing deadline. For investors, a material portion of their tax liability can potentially come from capital gains.
