A Special Message From the Music Director

Dear SDYS Musicians and Families,

I hope that all of you are doing well and are all safe and comfortable at home.  On behalf of all of us at SDYS, I would like to say how wonderful it has been to be able to stay connected with all of you during this time while you are at home.  All of our SDYS staff and conductors appreciate so much the opportunity to stay connected with you each week and to share special time with students and families.  We are all so inspired by the incredible talent and dedication that all of you have to your music and we are so proud that we are able to partner with all of our families to create inspirational music.  We hope that you will have a special and memorable time with all of your families at home this week and that music will fill your homes each day.  For the  Ovation Program Musicians  we will have our weekly Zoom meeting time together on  Saturday,   April 11 as outlined in my separate email to all of those families . I look forward to seeing all of our Ovation Program Musicians at our Zoom meeting. For our  Showcase Ensembles  and for our  Inspiration   Ensembles,  all of our conductors look forward to seeing you again soon with their Zoom meetings for  Showcase and Inspiration   ensembles  on  Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19th .

For my special message this week I have also included a special video for you as well to view to express our greatest appreciation, admiration and best wishes to all of our SDYS Musicians and Families in all of our Programs. We are thinking of all of you each day and you are truly an inspiration to all of us!

2020-2021 Registration
April 6, 2020 - May 8, 2020

Registration for SDYS’ 75th Anniversary 2020-21 Season is open now through May 8!   Please visit the  Parent Portal  to register or visit our  website  for more information.

Auditions

This year, in an effort to safeguard our students and staff, SDYS auditions will be made by video, submitted online through the Accept'd platform.  Students will be able to begin submitting their online audition videos on Friday, May 8, after our June registration period has closed.

Audition requirements have not changed, but they will be clarified at the opening of the submission period.  Students may upload audition videos between Friday, May 8 and Friday, June 5, when the June audition period closes.  All returning students must audition by June 5.

We will do our best to keep you informed with any additional pertinent information related to this year’s audition process. Students should be familiar with the audition expectations found in the  2020-2021 Audition Handbook . Please call the office or email  conservatory@sdys.org  with any further questions.
COVID-19

The SDYS office is closed, and all rehearsals in Balboa Park are suspended, at least until April 30 . Staff are still available via email and are working to provide opportunities for students to learn remotely. We are continuing to evaluate this fluid situation and will contact you regarding program updates. Please visit sdys.org/COVID-19 for any new information. 
Conductor Connections

With the exception of Mr. Edmons' Ovation session this weekend, there will be  no large ensemble Zoom sessions  for Showcase, Inspiration, and Beginning students. Your conductors look forward to resuming sessions with students on Saturday, 4/18 and Sunday, 4/19.

Ms. Swift will hold a make up Music Theory session on Saturday, 4/11. Please look for an email for specific theory class information.

San Diego Symphony High School Ambassadors Program Summer 2020

The San Diego Symphony is seeking creative, driven, and responsible individuals who may be interested our High School Ambassadors program this summer.   The San Diego Symphony’s High School Ambassadors  program is a PAID internship summer program to develop high school students for future employment. The program includes personal and professional development workshops, job shadowing opportunities and a capstone project. Participants will work as ambassadors for the San Diego Symphony within the community and during its Inaugural Season at its new summer venue, The Shell.

Program Benefits:
  • Develop job skills in: professional etiquette and demeanor, communication and customer service
  • Shadow arts administration industry professionals within a leading arts organization
  • Develop a broader artistic palette through attendance and participation at The Shell's concerts
  • Through an ambassador model, increase our community's awareness of the San Diego Symphony's concerts and programs in San Diego County
Job Shadowing Areas of Focus may include:
  • Artistic Planning
  • Customer Service
  • Fundraising
  • Learning and Community Engagement
  • Marketing
  • Special Events
  • Orchestra Personnel

Internship Requirements:
Applicants must be 15 years old or over and be qualified to receive a work permit from their school district if under the age of 18. Interns must commit to six program dates (to be determined) and must be available during all program dates. Schedule flexibility on dates are necessary. Ambassadors will work at the San Diego Symphony administrative offices and new permanent summer venue, The Shell, both located in Downtown San Diego. Transportation may be provided between the two venues but participants must arrange their own transportation to and from home.
