Season's First Downbeat 
for new musicians

Join us on Saturday, August 27 for an opportunity  to meet with our artistic faculty, administrative staff, board of directors, and other families prior to the first day of rehearsal.   All are welcome! 

No need to bring your instrument,

NOTE: There will no longer be a potluck meal. We thank you for your generosity; however, there is no need to bring a plate to share. Please see the revised schedule below.

Showcase Program
(Wind Symphony, Sinfonia, Concert Orchestra and Concert Winds)

9:45am - Check in at 1650 El Prado #207A (where you checked in for auditions), and                         breakfast social
10:30am - Orientation in Room 207
12:00pm - Peruse SDYS merchandise table, and local instrument vendor table

Inspiration Program and Principles of Music Class
(Symphonic Strings, Overture Strings, Overture Winds, Debut and Principles of Music classes)

12:30pm - Check in at 1650 El Prado #207A (where you checked in for auditions), and                         peruse SDYS merchandise table, and local instrument vendor table
1:00pm - Orientation in Room 207
2:30pm - Dessert social
3:15pm - Downbeat ends

Ovation Program
Musicians will have a separate orientation with Mr. Edmons at a later date. 
2016 SDYS Season's First Downbeat Parent Volunteer Sign-Up
We are looking for help with Season's First Downbeat! As a parent volunteer, you will be assisting our staff with the Season's First Downbeat orientation, and the breakfast and dessert social event on Saturday, August 27.

We are looking for several parent volunteers. Please meet our staff at the Casa del Prado room 207A in Balboa Park. This is the same location where you auditioned. ( Map).

Each hour of volunteer service will count as 1 service.

Inspiration and Showcase Programs
Principles of Music Class

This class introduces and strengthen basic principles of music such as ear training, rhythmic dictation and exercise, key signatures, note reading, clef reading, and much more, in an interactive setting.

Designed as an introduction to music,
we invite parents, guardians, and siblings to enroll in this class.  

Classes are offered based on minimum enrollment.

Tuition for Principles of Music is $250.

Class Date/Time:  Sundays 1:00-1:45pm
Start Date:  Sunday, September 11, 2016.

Showcase and Ovation Programs

SDYS Concerto Competitions


SDYS offers an annual  concerto  competition in both the Showcase and Ovation programs to further students' opportunities at the highest level.  Winners perform their solos accompanied by their respective orchestra or wind ensemble.  

A limited number of candidates from the preliminary round will be selected to advance to a public performance.  During this final round, students  compete for the opportunity to perform as a soloist with a full orchestra/wind ensemble at an SDYS concert during the 16-17 season.  Students also  compete to win a monetary award to be used to further their musical education.
Applications will be available early September at

Preliminary Round:  Sunday, October 23, 2016

Final Round:  Friday, November 4, 2016

Ovation  Competition
Preliminary Round: Sunday, October 16, 2016

Showcase Concerto Competition

Showcase Program students in Wind Symphony and Sinfonia in good standing with SDYS are eligible to apply for the Showcase  Concerto  Competition.  Showcase students may enter competition on their SDYS primary instrument.

Ovation Concerto Competition

Ovation Program students in good standing with SDYS are eligible to apply for the Ovation  Concerto  Competition.  Ovation or The Music Institute students may enter competition on either their primary instrument or piano, but not both.

One movement of a  concerto is to be selected. Non- concerto works are not permitted for use in the Ovation  Concerto  Competition.  Students must play the same movement from a concerto for the preliminary and for the final round.  If selected, the winner performs the entire concerto for the orchestra performance.

Repertoire is open for the Ovation  Concerto  Competition but must be approved by SDYS upon receipt of application due to copyright and rental availability of music from the publishers.

Musicians are not allowed to exceed the maximum permitted absences according to the Musician's Handbook  by participating in any events listed below.
"The President's Own" United States Marine Band, in conjunction with the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, is pleased to announce its annual concerto competition for high school musicians.  The winner will appear as a guest soloist with the U.S. Marine Band and receive a $2,500 cash prize from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. The runner up will receive a $500 cash prize.

The final round of the competition will take place at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 at John Philip Sousa Band Hall at the Marine Barracks Annex in southeast Washington, D.C. The final round is presented as a recital and is open to the public. The winner will perform in concert with the Marine Band at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 9, 2017 in the Washington, D.C. area.

2017 International Young Artists Competition - Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion.

S tarted in 1959, the Jefferson Symphony International Young Artists Competition celebrates the talent of outstanding young musicians. Held annually, this one-day 

 competition--originally a contest meant to give local students their first experience at public  performance--has evolved into a gathering of international musicians competing for substantial  cash awards.
