Memorial Day Weekend

There will be no Zoom sessions this weekend in observance of Memorial Day. The office will be closed Monday, May 25, and will resume regular business hours on Tuesday, May 26.

Dear SDYS Musicians and Families,

I hope that you are all having a wonderful week at home and that beautiful music is filling your homes each day.  As a special reminder, there will be no Zoom sessions this weekend due to the holiday weekend. Please enjoy a wonderful weekend together with your families! We are all also looking forward to a wonderful SDYS End of Season Online Celebration on June 13th for all SDYS students! And finally, please enjoy this inspirational video by Pablo Urbina, SDYS Ovation Alumni principal musician, who was in our Ovation Conducting Club and is now a professional conductor in Europe.

Weekend Zoom Sessions

In observance of Memorial Day, there will be no Zoom sessions this weekend. SDYS wishes you all a happy and healthy weekend!

If you are graduating from high school and SDYS this year, we would love to acknowledge your accomplishments and your future plans in our June 13 season's end virtual celebration.

*NEW* SDYS Youth Leadership Council

The SDYS Youth Leadership Council is a youth-led group of SDYS musicians who want to get more involved, connect with other SDYS musicians, and contribute positively to the future of SDYS.

Participants must have parent/guardian permission to join.

This Week in Music History

  • Symphony no. 3 by Sergei Prokofiev premiered on May 17, 1929. Maurice Ravel's Shéhérazade premiered on the same day in 1904.
  • Parade by Erik Satie premiered on May 18, 1917.
  • On May 19, 1735, Bach's Ascension Oratorio premiered in
  • On May 22, 1874 - Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi premiered in Milan, Italy. Richard Wagner was also born on that day in 1813.
Instrument Cleaning

When was the last time you really cleaned your instrument? Hopefully not too long ago...

Here are instructions on how to disinfect all kinds of instruments. Additional information for string players is found here.

Be very careful with alcohol on wood instruments and key pads for wind instruments!

The SDYS office is closed, and all rehearsals in Balboa Park are suspended until further notice. Staff are available via email and are working to provide opportunities for students to learn remotely. We are continuing to evaluate this fluid situation and will contact you regarding program updates. Please visit for any new information.

June 22-July 3, 2020

Join students at StringPlay Online, a summer camp based in Phoenix, Arizona, for a week-long exploration of musical creativity! Founded in 2013, StringPlay provides a fun, creative, and educational environment where students learn new musical skills and approach music in new ways.

​StringPlay is open to violinists, violists, cellists, and bassists who completed grades 7-12 in the 2019-2020 school year.
