Music Educator's Concert
Music Educator's Concert Overview

Our season's first concert will be on Sunday, November 20 at the California Center for the Arts (340 N Escondido Blvd, Escondido, CA 92025).

There will be regular rehearsals on Saturday, November 19,
but no rehearsals on Sunday, November 20. We encourage students in Debut Classes to attend the concert.

Participation at the concert is required by all performers.  There will be dress rehearsals prior to the concert, and as a reminder, any musician who misses the dress rehearsal will forfeit participation in the concert.  Please remember that it is an SDYS policy for all musicians to stay for the entire concert, being respectful of your conductors and fellow musicians.

Profiles in Music Education Award

This year we are proud to present the 2016 Profiles in Music Education Award to Julie Szweda at the 1:00PM Concert, and Gilbert Castellanos at the 6:00PM concert.
Concert Attire

Concert attire is required for the concert. All students should arrive to the dress rehearsal in concert attire. Please click HERE to review the SDYS concert attire requirements for each ensemble. Ladies, make sure your dress is long enough and that you have on black stockings/tights! We do have bow ties and tights in stock for $5 each, available at rehearsals.

Ovation, Showcase, and Inspiration Ensemble Photos

Ensemble photographs will be taken right after dress rehearsals on stage on November 20 in California Center for the Arts.    All performing musicians must come to the November 20 dress rehearsals in appropriate concert attire.   Students who do not follow the dress code will not be photographed. 
Concert Parking

There is a big parking lot to the north of the concert hall where you can park for free. From the parking lot, walk across the small bridge to the SDYS check-in area.  This is also where you'll pick up your musician after the dress rehearsals. All musicians can be picked up after the concert at the patio in front of the concert hall.

This week's Beyond the Staff will feature a panel discussion about applying to and auditioning for colleges.   It will also include practical information about getting the most out of SDYS' College Fair, which will be the following Saturday, November 19.  SDYS Music Director Jeff Edmons, SDYS Conservatory Program Coordinator Kyle Henning, an SDYS alum, and Mr. Hamilton from Hamilton Consulting, will be on the panel moderated by Deputy Director Amber Weber.

On Saturday, November 19 SDYS will be hosting our annual college fair right here in Casa del Prado!  This fair brings performing arts colleges and schools from across the country to talk with students about their opportunities to further their arts education. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 2016 Showcase Program Concerto Competition Preliminaries on Sunday, October 23. The judges were all very impressed by your high performance level. Everyone performed admirably, and you all should be very proud.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 2016 Ovation Program Concerto Competition Finals on October 28. It was a wonderful evening with outstanding performances that demonstrated a high level of musicianship and maturity.  Below are the results of the competition.

Congratulations to Erica Hwang and Christine Kim, who have been chosen to perform their concerto.  Erica will be performing the Violin Concerto, Op. 14 by Samuel Barber, and Christine will be performing Concerto for Flute and Orchestra in D Major, Op. 283 by Carl Reinecke. Both performances will take place later in the season, so stay tuned!

SDSU Oboe Masterclass

On Sunday, November 13 from 11:00AM-12:00PM Sarah Skuster will be presenting an oboe masterclass in room M113 at San Diego State University's School of Music and Dance. This masterclass is free and open to the pulic, and will cover the All State and All Southern Honor Band and Orchestra audition material. "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, in conjunction with the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, is pleased to announce its annual concerto competition for high school musicians.  The winner will appear as a guest soloist with the U.S. Marine Band and receive a $2,500 cash prize from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. The runner up will receive a $500 cash prize. 

The final round of the competition will take place at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 at John Philip Sousa Band Hall at the Marine Barracks Annex in southeast Washington, D.C. The final round is presented as a recital and is open to the public. The winner will perform in concert with the Marine Band at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 9, 2017 in the Washington, D.C. area.

Common Scholarship Application

The San Diego Foundation's 2017-2018 Common Scholarship Application will open Thursday, December 1. 

Each year the San Diego Foundation's Community Scholarship Program awards over $2 million to more than 800 local students to help them achieve their educational goals.  Please visit the San Diego Foundation's website here to learn about more than 100 different scholarship opportunities.
My Voice in the Arts

San Diego Opera's new MY VOICE IN THE ARTS program asks students to share their stories, interests, and perspectives by submitting written descriptions of their own personal artistic experiences. Student submissions will be read by San Diego Opera staff and reviewed by a committee consisting of local arts and civic leaders. Last year, SD Opera awarded over 50 students grades 6-12 (and their chaperones) season tickets to the opera.
