Colorimetric History: Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen
Do you know the backstory of the Kjeldahl digestion? TKN (Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen) is a very common method for our discrete and flow instruments, especially at wastewater facilities.

The Kjeldahl digestion was invented by Johan Gustav Christoffer Thorsager Kjeldahl (a man of many names!). Johan was the head of the chemistry department for the now world famous Carlsberg Brewery. The brewery needed a reliable test that would determine how much protein was in their grain for malting. If the grain had less protein, it could create more and better beer!
Johan Kjeldahl knew he could determine the amount of protein in a sample if he knew how much organic nitrogen existed in the sample, but no reliable method existed at the time. Being a resourceful chemist, Kjeldahl developed his own process, which is still widely considered to be the most robust and reliable method for organic nitrogen to this day!

The next time you're drinking a good beer, remember the part that Johan Kjeldahl had in developing craft beer and keeping wastewater clean and safe.

Outstanding Employee

This month's Outstanding Employee at SEAL US was announced at the half-year company meeting. Congratulations to QC and Production Specialist Kong Moua, who was nominated by several managers and colleagues!
Kong stepped up to the plate to fill a variety of unusual roles during a transition stage of the Production department; bringing new ideas and excellent character to the table. His willingness to listen and offer creative ideas makes him a stand-out member of the SEAL Analytical team.

MONTHLY TROUBLESHOOTING TIP
On SEAL discrete analyzers, reaction segments are used as the vessel for mixing reagents and standards - then incubating for the reaction time. It is vital that the reaction ring is filled with reaction segments. These segments are also one time use and cannot be cleaned and reused.

Earth's fifth ocean just confirmed

The Earth has finally attained popular recognition for its fifth ocean, with a decision by the National Geographic Society to add the Southern Ocean around Antarctica to the four it recognizes already: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic oceans.

Although the designation of the frigid waters around the icy southern continent as a separate ocean has kicked around for almost 100 years and is widely used by scientists, until now it has not had popular backing.

But on June 8 — World Oceans Day — the society announced it would henceforth be labeling the Southern Ocean as the fifth ocean on its maps of our planet
SOFTWARE FEATURE: Resync Peak Windows
With long runs on the segmented flow analyzers, sometimes it is beneficial to have the peak windows "resynced" over the course of the run. The software will essentially "re-find" all the peaks like it does at the beginning of the run.

In many cases, there should not be drifting throughout the run, but it can occur. When this happens, the resync option allows for less hassle.
