I love asking budding engineers how they chose structural engineering as a career path. I often hear similar answers like “I was good at math and drawing” or “I thought I wanted to be an architect until I realized what they do” or “I always enjoyed buildings and wondered how they were put together.” These responses mirror the same thoughts I had when I chose this path. Really, those are the factors we considered when deciding on what major to select in college. If you dig a little deeper, you’ll often find that there was an underlying passion that needed to be fed or acted upon. Maybe it was a pure enjoyment of the problem-solving process found in math, the creating of a real object from an idea or drawing, or even repeating the feelings that are evoked from the smell of sawdust.
