President's Message

Krista Looza, SE

2022-2023 SEAOC President

One of my favorite things about being a part of SEAOC is connecting with engineers from all over California. I love hearing about what everyone is up to in their respective corners of the profession, what they’ve learned or been challenged with lately, and who they have connected with. I am sure that many of you have experienced that the six degrees of separation is really like three degrees in the structural engineering community. I love how interconnected we all are and how we are like a big family with just a few cousins we haven’t met yet.

SEAOSC’s Bravo named College of Fellow Scholar

The SEAOC College of Fellows is pleased to announce the selection of Alejandra Bravo as the 2023 SEAOC College of Fellows Scholar. Alejandra will be pursuing a master’s degree in Architectural Engineering at Cal Poly beginning this Fall, and working with Dr. Behrouzi on research. The scholarship committee was very impressed with her many accomplishments, the enthusiasm that came through in her reference letters, her strong interest in pursuing a career in structural engineering, and her plans to make a difference in the profession.

Alejandra earned her undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering from Cal Poly SLO and has since worked in engineering practice as a Designer at FTF Engineering. At FTF she has been fortunate to design for a variety of project types (multi-story building, seismic retrofit, tenant improvement) in several sectors (multi-family residential, education, military). Beyond the office Alejandra has found great value in her active engagement with SEAOSC. She is a member of the inaugural Pathways Cohort, a second-year mentee in the WiSE Mentorship Program, and a participant in several committees (D&I, DES, WiSE, Convention).

Alejandra sees structural engineering as a profession that demands lifelong learning, and says she wants to pursue an advanced degree to gain a deeper understanding of the science. Her interests include assessment of post-earthquake building damage, sustainability, and seismic rehabilitation. She is looking forward to electives like Seismic Rehabilitation and Structural Fire Protection in addition to the core curriculum. Alejandra will also be doing research with Dr. Anahid Behrouzi, investigating how data visualization, geospatial information systems, and computer science can be leveraged in structural engineering research and applications.

“I am honored to be selected as the SEAOC College of Fellows Scholar for 2023 and grateful for their support,” she said.

The SEAOC College of Fellows Scholarship is awarded to a SEAOC member who holds an undergraduate degree in civil, structural, or architectural engineering and has chosen to return to school for a graduate degree in engineering, after having spent a year or more in practice. The objective of the $5,000 scholarship is to raise the level of structural engineering by promoting the educational development of California structural engineers through advanced degrees. Funding for the scholarship is provided by SEAOC College of Fellows member donations to the SEAOC Foundation.

Thank you to the College of Fellows Scholarship Committee: John Coil, David Cocke, Jon Heintz, Simin Naaseh, Mehran Pourzanjani, Kelly Cobeen, and Executive Director Don Schinske. Thank you to Veronica Timpane for her participation in judging of applications.

THE SEAOC FOUNDATION GRANT PROGRAM

The SEAOC Foundation is accepting abstracts for consideration to fund scholarships, educational efforts, or innovative research projects that align with the SEAOC Foundation Vision.

The scope of possible initiatives is broad, with the goal of soliciting a range of creative proposals from across the structural engineering community. Subject to the availability of resources and the quality of proposals, the Foundation intends to fund or partially fund one or more projects in 2023. Total grant awards for 2023 will be limited to $25,000.

Grant Program Criteria:

  • Proposals must clearly demonstrate alignment with the SEAOC Foundation Vision
  • Final deliverables must be made available for public use, if appropriate. Proposals must clearly outline what will and will not be made available for public use
  • Grants may not be used to develop proprietary and/or for-profit products
  • Final Grant Proposals must be submitted with a letter of support from at least one SEAOC member

Grant application process

The application process comprises two parts. The Foundation will initially review abstracts, and abstracts that appear to meet the criteria above will warrant a request of the applicant to provide a full Grant Proposal.

Submitting an Abstract

  • Interested parties may apply for a grant by submitting a complete abstract to the SEAOC Foundation office no later than Wednesday, May 31, 2023.
  • Abstracts must be limited to two pages. They will be submitted via the online submittal form (link below), which all includes specific questions about project goals and scope.
  • Upon receipt, the office will review the abstract for completeness. Upon confirmation that the abstract is valid, the applicant will receive a confirming receipt and notification that the abstract is cleared for further review by the Foundation board.
  • The Foundation board will select certain abstracts worthy of a request for a Grant Proposal. Selected applicants will be contacted via email to submit a formal Grant Proposal within 30 days.

SESOC 2023 Annual Conference

Reminder of the upcoming SESOC Conference 2023 in Christchurch! Registration is now open. SEAOC members can register using the SESOC member rate.

The Structural Engineering Society of New Zealand (SESOC) extends a warm invitation to our SEAOC colleagues to join us in Christchurch, on the South Island of New Zealand, on 21-23 June 2023 for our Conference 2023 “Celebrating Structural Engineering.” We welcome attendance from SEAOC members, and our technical program includes collaborative papers authored jointly by SEAOC and SESOC members. The location presents an opportunity to see the ongoing rebuilding of Christchurch City following the devastation of the earthquakes in 2010-2011.
