It’s late, the night after my deadline for writing this, my last President’s message of the year. This is usually the time when the words start flowing freely, but tonight it’s not really happening. (A note from the future: so he says before indeed proceeding to successfully tap out a few meandering pages…) Procrastination is the name of my trusty, if tardy, steed that I’ve ridden into battle many times and come out victorious, but the risk is that she comes up lame sometimes. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m out of ideas after a year of writing these or that I actually have so much to say but can’t figure out where to start. Maybe it’s time to throw a saddle on that old mule we all have in our stable, the one people often trot out when they can’t think of something original to ride: famous quotations. (That could actually be a good racehorse name. Aaaaaaand it’s Famous Quotations by half a furlong!). I’ll start with A.A. | | May Board Meeting Updates | |
Our May Board meeting was held virtually a week ahead of our SEE Awards Celebration. Main points of business included:
- Planning for committee leadership appreciation and learning events for the summer and fall.
- Approval of our board and officer slate and preparations for balloting.
- Review of proposed updates to our corporate and industry sponsorship program for the coming year.
- Approval of updates to SEAONC’s investment policy statement to include the retention of Kingsbury Capital as our investment advisor.

Join SEAONC as we close out the 2025-2026 fiscal year and welcome 2026-2027 at our Annual Business Meeting — a beloved tradition celebrating the accomplished leaders in our community.
The evening begins with a cocktail reception at 5:00 pm (wine and beer hosted by SEAONC), followed by a 3-course dinner and program at 5:30 pm. We'll recognize recipients of the H.J. Brunnier Lifetime Achievement Award, the Helmut Krawinkler Award, and the Edwin G. Zacher Awards, and welcome new Fellow and Honorary Members. President David Ojala will pass the gavel to incoming President Lisa Cassedy, and three new Board Members will be announced.
Past Presidents, Honorary, Life, and Fellow members, the current Board of Directors, award recipients, and their presenters will all be honored guests for the evening.

SE3 was excited to partner with BOA and AIA BAYA last month for our first Harvey Milk Happy Hour! Thanks to all who attended and celebrated the legacy of one of SF’s most influential LGBTQ+ figures. Special shoutout to our incoming committee chair, Mason Moritz, for hosting a fun game of Jeopardy.

| Outreach: Shadow Program Progress | |
As the school year comes to a close, we wanted to highlight some of the recent Outreach events that we have done and share the progress of the new Shadow Program launched this year!
Recent Events
It has been a busy year for the Outreach committee as we have collaborated with a number of schools and organizations to spread the word about structural engineering to young students. To highlight, some of our most recent events included collaborations with Techbridge, Galileo HS, Santa Teresa HS, and James Lick Middle School. Our volunteers worked directly with the students to give presentations about structural engineering and do hands-on activities. The students were engaged and excited to learn about structural engineering. We are hopeful that this ignited the spark for at least one future structural engineer!
Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make these events possible and took time out of their schedule to go to the schools - Emily Guglielmo, Leena Kibriya, Emilie Phuong, Megan Vandervort, Hong Kim, Elizabeth Splees, Noelle Yuen and many more throughout the year!
Shadow Program Updates
We launched our shadow program at the beginning of this year and want to thank the many engineers who volunteered to be a shadow for over 25 students so far! Sign up here if you’re interested as we’re always looking for volunteers to pair with students throughout the year.

Bring It Home: Resources for The Community

In the last webinar of SEAOC's three-part embodied carbon webinar series, Marisa Nolasco and Marissa Visconti will unveil the newly reformatted Resource Hub Website developed by our SEAONC SDC. This presentation will focus on resources available to the structural engineering community to help inform and standardize sustainability principles in practice.
The Resource Hub focuses on sustainability and embodied carbon policy and practice and serves as a committee-made wiki designed to encourage engagement, conversation, and knowledge sharing within the structural engineering community.

SEAONC Existing Buildings Committee (EBC) and Disaster Emergency Services Committee (DES) are having a joint in-person meeting in June! Join us at Degenkolb San Francisco for a collaborative discussion on the role of structural engineers in post-disaster reconnaissance, including placing and removing tags, and firsthand stories from the field.
