Happy March, Friends,
Well, that was a rush! I’m someone that can feel the drag of the midwinter SADs, but every four years we’re blessed with a few weeks of joy during the winter doldrums, lit by the eternal flame of the Olympic and Paralympic torch. As long as I can remember, I’ve been absolutely enchanted by the Olympics, especially the winter games. The first games I remember remembering was in 1988, where I also remember catching my first glimpses of the iconic hyperbolic paraboloid atop the Calgary Saddledome, a structure that would later be a big inspiration for me abandoning my dreams of hockey or biathlon stardom (in my dreams I’d somehow manage to compete in both, like some kind of Nordic Bo Jackson) in favor of winning a gold medal in making sure things remain (essentially) immobile. I also remember managing to get my hands on an xacto knife, which I used to make tiny skiers out of strips of index cards, white glue and bent staple poles, whooshing down cotton ball hills, something far more up my alley, talent-wise. Now, as a father and knowing what I do about my own dexterity and luck with knives over the years, I get a little tense at that thought, but it was pretty par for the course. David was saddened to have sat alone with a delicious Macchiato, an agua fresca, and then a margarita at Cenote (99 Pine Street, San Francisco) last month, but as a perfect transitional meeting place, he’s going to stubbornly do it again in March so he can share it with some of you. Are you a SEAONC veteran with complaints to (politely) lodge? New to SEAONC with questions? Want thoughtful opinions on deep beams or irrational opinions on deep dish pizza? Stop on in. First few attendees get their beverage of choice on David’s tab.
Can’t make it this time? No worries. We’re hoping to make this a regular informal gathering with your SEAONC Officers and change up the locations (maybe even virtual) and times a bit in the coming months. Stay tuned and let us know if you have a favorite afternoon haunt to consider for April or thoughts on a time that might be more appealing for you!

Communications Director, Jenna Wong, hosted our February Board meeting at San Francisco State University ahead of our evening meeting at SFSU’s Seven Hills Conference Center. We were joined by Applied Technology Council (ATC) Executive Director, Jon Heintz, and Board President, Kelly Cobeen. We had a great conversation around the current challenges faced by ATC and how we can improve collaboration and knowledge share in both directions, including improving SEAONC member awareness of the timely technical resources completed and underway and also creating a simple way for ATC to hear the needs of our members and plan their next projects to respond to those. Additional points of business included:
- Planning for upcoming monthly meetings and events, including our April Trivia night and April educational events commemorating the 1906 Earthquake.
- Received updates on the 2026-2027 Board Nominating Committee, which will be responsible for nominating both a President-Elect AND Treasurer, as well as a slate of potential directors.
- Discussed status of SEAOC administrative restructuring and potential timelines for SEAONC transition into SEAOC’s proposed association management software (AMS) package.

Join us for our March meeting featuring The Thoughtful Co., as we examine the business case for gender equity and its impact on long-term performance. This interactive workshop will be offered as a simulcast across four Bay Area locations, allowing attendees to engage locally while participating in a shared experience.

| | SEAONC SEE Awards: Submit Your Entries Now | |
The call for entries is now open for the SEAONC Structural Engineering Excellence (SEE) Awards. California-based design teams are invited to submit projects that showcase innovation, creativity, and impact in structural engineering.
Entries must be submitted by March 9. Projects recognized locally may advance to the statewide SEAOC SEE Awards.
| Student Scholarship Applications Due March 15 | SEAONC has opened applications for its 2026 Student Scholarship Program in partnership with Computer and Structures, Inc. (CSI). The program will award two to seven scholarships of up to $5,000 each to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing careers in structural engineering or related AEC fields, along with up to two $2,500 scholarships for high school students planning to study in the field. Applications are due March 15, and recipients will be announced by April 15 and recognized at the SEAONC SEE Awards and Scholarship Night in San Francisco. | NCSEA Issues Call for Summit Presentation Proposals | | The 2026 Structural Engineering Summit is coming to San Francisco, and NCSEA is seeking session proposals! Education sessions should deliver practical, relevant, and actionable insight for practicing structural engineers across technical and non-technical tracks. Abstracts are due April 3. | | Outreach Committee: Job Shadow Program & Spring Outreach | | |
We’ve launched our shadowing program where high school and college students can shadow a structural engineer to experience a sneak peak of a day in our life! We’ll pair you with a student based on interest and availability.

| Continuing Education Committee: Save the Date for 2-Part Seminar | The SEAONC Continuing Education Committee will host a two-part seminar on ASCE 41-23 Code Updates on March 24 and March 31 at The 601 City Center, 601 12th Street, Oakland. The technical program will highlight and explore some of the key changes in the Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings standard that is now referenced in the 2025 California Existing Building Code. At EBC’s February meeting we were joined by Laurel Mathews from San Francisco DBI and Joe Maffei of Maffei Structural Engineering to discuss the recently released Concrete Building Screening Program screening form. Laurel shared more information about the program, the form, and some improvements that SFDBI is working on to streamline the screening form process. A task group within EBC reviewed the form and compiled a list of comments and questions about the screening form, which Laurel and Joe addressed during the meeting. Additional feedback on ways to clarify the form was collected from the EBC members who attended the meeting, resulting in a list of potential updates for DBI to assess.

Currently, a copy of responses is not provided automatically. If you’d like a copy of your responses, email dbi.concrete@sfgov.org.
What if my building falls into an edge case and does not perfectly fit into the questions on the form? (e.g., an unconventional or irregular building type)
Email dbi.concrete@sfgov.org for edge cases that may not fall within the questions on the form.
| Sustainable Design Committee: Join Our Monthly Meeting | |
The SEAONC Sustainable Design Committee (SDC) is looking forward to our upcoming lunch meeting on Tuesday, March 10. We will be hosting a “bring-it-back” session from the 2026 SEAOSC Sustainability Summit, held last month in Pasadena, CA. The session will be led by Justin Sharkey, PE, of Holmes, who will share highlights from the day’s presentations, along with insights from his own session on current strategies for conducting life-cycle assessments (LCAs) and the latest LCA tools.
