Ken O'Dell, SE
President
As I contemplate the last few weeks and the SEAOSC weekly updates issued as we transitioned to remote Work-from-Home satellite offices, I’m struck by the word “transition”. My Webster’s New College Dictionary defines transition as “an act, process, or instance of changing from one state, form activity, or place to another”. However, instead of focusing on the changes we just underwent to reshape how we conduct business and interact with our families, I thought I would look to the transition of the seasons that April and May bring to California.

An Update from SEAOSC Student Chapters
|
|
Restructured, refocused, and rebranded: the 2019-2020 officer board at the University of California, Los Angeles has been hard at work bridging the gap between earthquake engineering research and practice. This year, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) chapter has successfully formalized a partnership with the Structural Engineering Association of Southern California (SEAOSC), officially becoming
EERI-SEAOSC at UCLA. By combining cutting-edge research resources on campus with the professional network of SEAOSC, the student chapter has equipped undergraduate and graduate students with the tools needed for future leadership in professional and academic capacities. As of April 2020, the chapter now has a total of 70 active members -- a 200% increase from the previous year.
|
|
With the support of SEAOSC and 11 partner companies based in Southern California, the UCLA chapter initiated a new professional development program, complete with office visits, professional workshops and industry seminars. In November 2019, EERI-SEAOSC hosted
its first annual Earthquake Engineering Career fair, bringing corporate partners and student members together. Most graduate students matriculate through the UCLA M.S. program in three quarters, making this event a vital step in entering the professional community before graduating in June. SEAOSC provided professional volunteers for a career fair “bootcamp” prior to the event, which provided students advice for career fair success as well as a comprehensive resume review.
|
|
Throughout Fall and Winter, several corporate partners hosted office visits, which build upon relationships formed at the Career Fair. At a given visit, companies have the opportunity to informally network with students and introduce them to office life and culture. To date, EERI-SEAOSC at UCLA has organized 7 office visits through the school year.
|
|
The chapter has been equally active on the academic front: research roundtables were held quarterly, offering undergraduate students the opportunity to join exciting projects led by earthquake engineering faculty. In January, several members travelled to Berkeley, CA to attend the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center’s (PEER) 2020 Annual Meeting, which offered an in-depth view of the future of performance-based natural hazards engineering. Omar Issa, Kenneth Hudson, and Abhimanyu Singh presented research posters at the conference.
|
|
With the support of SEAOSC, the UCLA chapter was also able to continue its “
Distinguished Speaker Series”, which is now in its second year. This seminar brings industry & academic visionaries to campus to spark conversation around cutting edge structural/earthquake engineering research and practice. This year, Professor Jack Baker of Stanford University presented an exciting seminar for our members and held an intimate conversation about community involvement, policy making, and future design guidelines within the context of natural hazards engineering.

SEAOSC Student Chapter at Cal Poly, SLO
|
|
By Sophia Looney (Chapter President) and John Lawson SE (Faculty Advisor)
SEAOSC’s Student Chapter at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo serves as a professional club for students in the university’s Architectural Engineering (ARCE) major. Unlike a broader Civil Engineering program, ARCE at Cal Poly focuses only on structural engineering of buildings, making it an ideal environment for a SEAOC student chapter. First established as a SEAOC affiliated chapter in the early 1980s, this club promotes professionalism and networking for its members, in order to connect students from the school aspect of structural engineering to the professional field. Also the club provides a positive outlet to foster an effective work-life balance, promote diversity and inclusivity, and prepare our members for success after their time at Cal Poly. With about 150 members, the club has weekly meetings with professionals from the industry discussing important topics in structural engineering, incredible projects they have worked on, career preparation, and more. In addition, the club hosts its own career fair Structural Forum, a no-resume all-day event where students can foster a personal relationship with companies in the industry. Through fundraising, the club sends students to various cities across California and the nation to visit professional firms and construction sites to extend our network, to expose our students to out-of-the-classroom experiences, and to allow students a better understanding of how an engineer’s work is interpreted after drawings are submitted. Work-life balance is encouraged with fun activities that our chapter provides including quarterly beach BBQs, annual kayaking trips to Morro Bay, a golf tournament, and quarterly intramural sports. The goals for the chapter are to promote professionalism and provide a safe space for students to foster their networking skills and friendships among classmates.

SEAOC Position on the Critical Function of Structural Engineering During the COVID-19 Pandemic
SEAOC
has adopted the following position regarding the importance of structural engineering for projects that are permitted to begin or continue construction during the COVID 19 pandemic:
The Structural Engineers Association of California
hereby confirms that structural engineers and structural engineering firms provide essential services in maintaining critical infrastructure; provide professional services required to support legally mandated construction activities; and are mandated by licensure and ethics to safeguard life, health, property and public welfare. During this critical time in our state’s and nation’s history, it is imperative that structural engineering functions in support of construction be allowed to continue on the same basis as construction continues in order to protect the public.
The background to and basis for this position are available on the
SEAOC website
, along with recommendations for performance of critical structural-engineering functions during the COVD-19 pandemic.

In Memory of Lynn Walton Bockemohle
Lynn was taken into the arms of his Lord on Thursday March 26, 2020 at St. Luke's Magic Valley Hospital following complications caused by the COVID-19 virus.
He was born in California on Oct. 20,1935 to Clinton and Kathleen Bockemohle and grew up in Coronado, California and the small dairy community of Artesia. Lynn had a strong interest in engineering and construction coming from an engineering family. He did his undergraduate and graduate studies at USC School of Engineering serving concurrently in the Air National Guard. Later he became a licensed Civil and Structural Engineer in California and Idaho, a career he followed all through his professional life until retirement in the year 2000. His consulting engineering practice involved the design and construction of major structures in California and throughout the nation. Professionally,
Lynn became president of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California and was active in developing building codes to help buildings stand-up during earthquakes.
It was in his days at USC he met Sharon, the love of his life, where both were active in the Hollywood Presbyterian Church and were married there in 1962. They raised their family in La Canada. Upon retirement, Lynn and Sharon moved to Sun Valley where they were active in the Church of the Bigwood, again as an Elder.
Lynn had a passion for skiing, often in Europe, biking in Italy and New Zealand, hiking, backpacking, fly fishing, climbing Sierra peaks and travel. Buying his new red Porsche in Germany opened a new world of exploring. Numerous camera safaris to East and South Africa peaked Lynn's interest in wildlife photography.
He was a kind, caring and selfless man with a big smile. He enjoyed helping and meeting people as he volunteered enthusiastically throughout the valley. He was at Prairie Creek on Wednesdays patrolling the trails and at the hospital on Friday at the front desk. Singing in Caritas and the church choir and ushering at the symphony and the jazz were other ways he contributed. He was always on hand to help maintain the PCBW school and church, including designing and installing the plexiglass baffles above the choir loft. He built most of the original furniture in the church and was given a branding iron that read bbb (built by bock). He looked for ways to improve things.
Lynn, a remarkable husband is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Sharon; daughter Allison Rohrer (Matt); grandchildren Johnathin Woodward, Amanda Woodward, Ariana James; great grandson Trevor Patton; sister Anna Kerr (Jack); brother Paul and niece Carol Gage.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood. A Memorial Service will be held when we are permitted to assemble.
