Ken O'Dell, SE
President
If, like me, you are caught in the end of the year holiday rush, you may appreciate a brief President’s message. For those of you able to join our Holiday Dinner at Morton’s last week, I expect is was a great evening for you. Those of you who took home a few of the giveaways from CSI, I imagine it was even better. It sure appeared that fun was had by all. As prefaced in my introduction, the evening was about YOU, the members of SEAOSC, and the chance to share with friends and colleagues. I hope that you are creating life long friendships with your fellow Structural Engineers.

Committee Update - Communications Committee
|
|
The Communications Committee has been working through our continual goal of modernizing SEAOSC’s communication platforms. The committee is currently working to update the current SEAOSC website with more targeted audience content for various sections of the website. The communications committee also continues to work on increasing SEAOSC’s visibility to the community. We are now live tweeting and posting on SEAOSC’s LinkedIn page during the monthly dinner meetings in order to update members about the event presentations as well as collect questions from members who are not able to attend the dinner meetings. If you are unable to attend a dinner meeting and are interested in the presentations, please follow us and send us your tweets throughout the events with your questions and comments.
The committee is also currently working on a Fact Sheet that will be distributed to local or State level policy makers and elected officials. The Fact Sheet is designed to provide basic information about the Building Code and Building Performance as an introduction to the overall advocacy by SEAOSC to promote improved building standards.
Our committee’s main role is to promote SEAOSC for the membership as well as the general public. We continue to publicize SEAOSC’s contribution to the community as well as the achievements of various SEAOSC committees. If you would like to participate in the Communications Committee, or would like to learn more about the committee, please contact Maria Mohammed at
mmohammed@structuralfocus.com.

SEAOSC Holiday Dinner Write-Up
SEAOSC celebrated the end of the year with its annual SEAOSC Holiday Dinner at Morton’s Steakhouse in Downtown Los Angeles. The (TV) yule logs were warming the room as members, friends, and family enjoyed each other’s company. In special attendance, Ashraf Habibullah, founder, President, and CEO of Computers and Structures, Inc., kicked off the gift-giving season with iPads, Fitbit watches, and structural analysis textbooks to a lucky few in the room in addition to sponsoring dinner for all the students who attended. In the same spirit, regular event sponsor Optimum Seismic offered to cover a year of membership fee for anyone who were not yet SEAOSC members, and Kurt Fischer of Kurt Fischer Structural Engineering donated his half of the 50/50 raffle back to the SEAOSC Foundation. SEAOSC thanks everyone who attended this event and wishes all our members a very happy Holidays and New Year!
