Ken O'Dell, SE
President
Well, with the rush of January behind us, I realized I missed the opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year… so here’s to those belated wishes. I trust this finds you well and already kicking off the next decade with an abundance of enthusiasm. Whether the economy holds steady or begins a “correction”, 2020 promises to be exciting. One cannot help but “see 2020” as a year for visionary (yes…pun intended) endeavors. Before we head down the path and jump into new ideas, I thought it might be good to look back at our history and legacy as an Association.

2020 SEAOC/SEAOSC EXCELLENCE IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING AWARDS

Disaster Emergency Services (DES) Committee Update
|
|
One of the Disaster Emergency Services (DES) Committee tasks each year is to organize a Safety Assessment Program (SAP) Evaluator class for our SEAOSC members. This year the class will be offered sometime in April or May, date TBD. Please look for SEAOSC coming up emails with the date of our class.
By taking the SAP Evaluator class, our members become eligible to tag structures after a disaster. This is very important work that helps communities bounce back. By providing the class annually, we are hoping that most, if not all, of our SEAOSC members are trained and ready to be deployed when needed.
The class to become a SAP Evaluator is offered to everyone, but engineers must have a current PE license to be on the registry and be eligible to be deployed. The SAP Certification needs to be renewed every 5 years. You can either renew it by attending one of our all-day classes, or renew it online at caloes.ca.gov (search for Safety Assessment Program Evaluator Refresher Training).
In addition to organizing our classes, the DES Committee is constantly working on updating the SAP Evaluator database to make sure we have the accurate contact information for all evaluators. If you are registered as an evaluator and would like to update your contact information, please send us an email at our DES committee address.
If there are any questions about the SAP class or our DES committee please contact Laura Basualdo or Doug Litchfield at
des.seaosc@gmail.com.

SEAOSC CELEBRATES NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK
|
|
While the nation celebrates President's Day commemorating our founding and sustaining fathers; the Engineering community celebrates National Engineer's Week to acknowledge the contributions to society that engineers make.
Started in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Engineer's Week is tied to the week in February which encompasses George Washington's actual birthday. This is in recognition of Washington being considered by many as the nation's first engineer, notably for his survey work.
With this in mind, it seems appropriate, that on this, the birthday of the nation's first engineer, we take a moment to celebrate all that we do in advancing the profession of Structural Engineering by ensuring the safety of the built environment.
The Structural Engineers Association of Southern California wishes to thank our members for their individual and collective impact on the communities within which they work and live.
Congratulations and Happy Engineer's Week!!
