Ken O'Dell, SE
President
If, like me, you are caught in the end of the year holiday rush, you may appreciate a brief President’s message. For those of you able to join our Holiday Dinner at Morton’s last week, I expect is was a great evening for you. Those of you who took home a few of the giveaways from CSI, I imagine it was even better. It sure appeared that fun was had by all. As prefaced in my introduction, the evening was about YOU, the members of SEAOSC, and the chance to share with friends and colleagues. I hope that you are creating life long friendships with your fellow Structural Engineers.

Committee Update - Younger Member Committee
|
|
The Younger Member Committee (YMC) hosted a kickoff meeting in October at Holmes Structures’ downtown office to start this SEAOSC fiscal year. The event was attended by both returning and new younger members. The kickoff meeting focused on introducing new younger members to SEAOSC with overviews of some of the YM events planned for this fiscal year.
Through November to January, the committee’s focus has been the SEAOSC Career Fair and Student Scholarship Night. The YMC has been actively working on promoting this event among local universities and engineering firms, reaching out for donations for the scholarships, reviewing student applications, planning for event presentation, etc.
The committee is also planning on hosting a few technical and social events throughout the year for YMs such as showcase presentation and office tours at different engineering firms, field trips to job site or Cities, hiking, happy hours, etc.
Also, this year YMC updated its committee structure with more active coordinator roles. The coordinators are taking charge in different aspects of the committee matters to ensure successful implementation of committee activities and events.
YMC is also in the process of introducing YM Liaisons with other committees this year. YM Liaisons will serve as bridges between YMC and other SEAOSC committees. They will be new blood to each committee by participating committee meetings and help in committee matters. They will also report back to the YMC so more interests in other Committees can be fostered among YMs and students.

SEAOSC January Dinner Meeting Recap
To kick-off the new decade, SEAOSC took a look back ten years ago to 2010 when earthquakes devastated Chile and Haiti. A panel of three structural engineers Anuj Bansal of Degenkolb, James Kramer of MHP Structural Engineers, and Mark Broughton of Miyamoto and moderator Deepansh Kathuria of Miyamoto discussed observations from post-earthquake reconnaissance trips, lessons-learned, and past-to-current recovery efforts. Anuj started the discussion sharing his experience in Chile where he saw how the earthquake revealed inadequacies of the building code thru structural damage and gave the world an opportunity to see how a developed nation would be affected by a major earthquake. In contrast, James shared his experience in Haiti where as a still-developing nation, Haiti’s buildings and homes were destroyed, yet the resiliency of the people allowed them to resume their daily lives amongst the rubble. Mark, a practicing engineer working in Miyamoto’s Haiti office, shared with us the Haitian government’s response immediately following the earthquake thru today where Haiti has adopted a building code and shows a greater concern for quality of construction. However, he notes that much work has yet to be done to enforce building code and ensure that all buildings are able to resist the next big earthquake. SEAOSC thanks our speakers, sponsors, and all those who attended. Please remember to renew your membership for 2020, and we hope to see you supporting the next generation at next month’s Student Night!
