SEAOSC NEWS
JULY / AUGUST 2020

Matthew Barnard, S.E.
President
2020 is truly shaping up to be a year like no other. While there are unique challenges and uncertainty to this year, I am excited about the opportunity for the SEAOSC Community to come together and to make a difference. I hope you are too.
Over the summer, our Board made a fantastic commitment to a set of initiatives for 2020/2021. Today I would like to highlight two of those initiatives.
-
Women in Structural Engineering (WiSE): One of our most active committees is WiSE. While providing a supportive community for many of our members, WiSE has been crucial in bringing the human side of our industry to the Association. We are excited that we will be having our next Personal Mastery Summit on Feb. 24. Huge thank you to the team from WiSE that is inspiring and shaping this event that will benefit of all. Over the summer, WiSE has also been exploring what is next for WiSE. This strategic planning effort is intended to help us make sure that WiSE remains a strong part of the SEAOSC community.
-
Diversity & Inclusion (D&I): Following our June 26th event, a group of us stayed on the call and started talking about what SEAOSC can do now and in future to enhance our Diversity and Inclusivity. When we look in the mirror, the reality is that we can do better. Where are our black engineers? Why so few females on our technical committees? How do we keep all generations involved including getting the young members actively engaged throughout the organization? How are we supporting our LGBTQ+ members? Our friend Lorena Arce has stepped up to chair the SEAOSC D&I effort. Join the team. Lorena and team have been meeting weekly setting up the framework of the Initiative. Watch our social media feeds and this newsletter for opportunities to get involved and enhance the SEAOSC community.

SEAOSC 2020 Annual Report
|
|
This year the Board of Directors determined that a yearly report should be initiated to provide our members a review of the year’s activities, accomplishments and items remaining “On the Boards”, yet to be completed.
From a strategic perspective, this year was spent discussing ways to ensure the association
had the capacity to fulfill its mission. These discussions were informed by a Strategic Framework which enabled the Board and the Committees, in conjunction with the Association’s
Management, to develop a collaborative structure between the different parts of the
organization.
We encourage you to review the Annual Report and hope you will recognize the good work that has been done, but also the important tasks yet before us.

Existing Building Committee is Soliciting Input on a Survey
|
|
Members of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California – Existing Building Committee are soliciting input on a survey. The survey is developed to better understand the state of the Structural Engineering Practice with respect to building separation requirements for existing buildings (i.e. pounding) and with respect to existing buildings over faults. The intent of soliciting input on the state of practice is to better understand what code provisions need to be developed to offer appropriate guidance to the Structural Engineering Practice and to bring consistency to the implementation of these complex issues. We would appreciate if you can take the survey by clicking on the link below related to these two topics that are heavily debated in seismic retrofits specifically those triggered by ordinances. Survey results will be used to develop a couple of papers for the upcoming SEAOC virtual conference.

2020 SEAOSC Annual Golf Tournament
|
|
With the Covid-19 pandemic ongoing there was much discussion as to whether we could even hold a tournament this year. With few opportunities for in person meeting, being out on the golf course and social distancing seemed a great chance to get together and it was! We returned to Friendly Hills Country Club (FHCC) in Whittier again this year on Monday, August 10th and they did a fantastic job! We were limited to 72 players this year and we sold out in just over 4 weeks! Clearly there was interest in getting outside and meeting your fellow SEAOSC members!
|
|
We had a scorecard playoff for 1st place this year with a tie for the top two scores of 56 (at 19 under). It took 4 tiebreakers on the scorecard to get a winner! 1st place tournament winners were Jeff Crosier, Roger Egge, Dan McCarthy, and Larry Nelson. 2nd place tournament winners were Scott Stevens, Don Sunseri, Stephen Brown and Brian Winley. Closest to the pin awards went to Don Sunseri (on #8) and Nick Caniglia (on Hole #16). Long drive awards went to Josh Todd and Markie McCauley. Accurate drive award went to Dave Hansen.
Thanks again to everyone’s participation. Proceeds will be going to the SEAOSC Foundation. We look forward to doing this again in 2021!
Stay safe out there!

WILL FUTURE ENGINEERING STUDENTS BE ADEQUATELY PREPARED TO WORK IN YOUR FIRM? You are invited to participate in the 2020 NCSEA Structural Engineering Practitioner Survey. Your survey responses will assist NCSEA's Basic Education Committee (BEC) in communicating with universities, current students, and rising professionals about the attributes sought in new hires by the structural engineering community as well as look for opportunities to supplement education where needed.
The NCSEA Basic Education Committee (BEC) seeks your input to identify the courses and technical skills required of individuals entering the structural engineering workforce, as well as, the preparedness of today’s graduates. The BEC advocates an academic curriculum which prepares students for practice in the structural engineering profession. Additionally, the committee is looking to supplement educational curriculum for structural engineering students by engaging with educational professionals, NCSEA committees, and member organizations, and assisting with activities that promote the knowledge and skills the engineering community views as necessary when entering the profession.
As far as other things to update on, I wish I could provide an update on the NCSEA Leadership Summit but the first session, there was terrible audio issues, the second one, more technical issues and I was not able to attend the last one. I can listen to the recordings and provide feedback if you’d like, just let me know. I will say of the parts that I did hear, a lot of the conversation revolved around the pandemic and what are people doing to get through this. For more information about the BEC please contact Michelle Kam-Biron NCSEA BEC Member mkambiron@awc.org
