Ken O'Dell, SE
President
We are Engineers. In numerous meetings, I have participated in discussions regarding what this means and why it is important to express it consistently and concisely. As our structural engineering profession is impacted by many internal and external changes, it is incumbent on each of us and the Association to individually and collectively define the importance of “the structural engineer”.

SEAOSC Education Committee Update
The SEAOSC Education Committee strives to help structural engineers improve both their technical and nontechnical skills through webinars, dinner meetings, and full day education events. Adapting to the new environment created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Education Committee has been converting all in-person education events into online webinars. Currently, our goal is to start planning for educational topics of interest to our membership and potential presenters for the next year. We are committed to providing valuable educational opportunities to SEAOSC members and will continue with the webinar format for the time being.
The Education Committee provides a unique opportunity to its members to interface with technical experts and industry leaders within structural engineering as well as other industries, such as marketing or finance, all while providing a highly desired benefit to fellow engineers. For anyone interested in joining, the committee welcomes all ideas and supports individual leadership in developing educational programs.
The SEAOSC Education Committee is always open to new members, as well as feedback on past events and suggestions for the future. Email
education@seaosc.org if you have an interest in helping to organize educational opportunities for our membership or provide feedback.

SEAOSC Membership Committee Update
It is the membership committee’s goal to emphasize the benefits SEAOSC brings to those that are part of its organization. As with most of the structural engineering profession, the organization has strived to remain active and operational even with the current disruptions to the normal way of life. Dinner meetings have been made available as webinars and now come with the added bonus of being able to be shared across a company. SEAOSC has also taken this disruption as an opportunity to expand the online member resources. During the past month a forum has been set up so that members can exchange information virtually. This forum’s primary intent is to serve as a way of sharing knowledge about and during the current Safer-at-Home Directive. Please log on to the forum to engage with members and get some questioned answered. It is available at this link -
https://www.seaosc.org/Safer-at-Home-Crisis-Forum
.
One of the key benefits to belonging to a professional organization is the face to face socialization and networking opportunities it provides. With the growth of online social networking, many professional organizations have struggled to understand how to stay relevant in the midst of the changing social dynamics. This year has brought an abrupt change to the way we can safely socialize and congregate. The global pandemic has forced us to accept new and different forms of comradery. As a result, almost everyone has learned to accept and actively use their own virtual presence. Hopefully one take away from these times is a new perspective and ease in interacting remotely over all generations.
Even before this recent complete paradigm shift, the organization’s leadership has strived to understand how to best evolve and provide for our members in socially changing times. They have been assembling a survey with an aim to understand how we can move forward together to better serve our profession. A valuable benefit to being a member of a professional organization is the opportunity to belong to a collective voice. This unity allows our profession to react quickly in changing times and helps elevate our profession overall. Please participate in the survey and keep our voice as an organization strong. Please provide your opinions and interests in the survey available at this link -
https://seaosc.wufoo.com/forms/seaosc-members-survey-2020.
In closing, this month's article was intended to provide a recap of the membership appreciation event we typically hold in the spring. Unfortunately, we were forced to cancel the event we had planned for this year. We are hopeful we will be able to hold the event next year and have postpone our plans for the event. In the meantime, we have received some interest in holding a virtual event. We are in the preliminary phase of working out the logistics of hosting a trivia or game night for members. If anyone would like to help out with this event or has an idea or helpful suggestion for a virtual event, please reach out to the membership committee at
membership@seaosc.org.
Hope everyone is staying safe and hope to see you, virtually at an event soon.

SEAOSC Recent Event Recap
May 6, 2020 -
Webinar - What's Coming in ACI 318-19
Dr. John Wallace, Professor of Civil Engineering at UCLA, provided an overview of coming changes to the ACI 318-19 concrete building code. Through testing, feedback from industry professionals, and observations of past earthquakes, ACI was able to create updates for the design of gravity systems, detailing and seismic design provisions. Some of the topics included were changes for punching shear provisions, concrete shear wall provisions, and concrete shear wall boundary detailing. Although these updates do not officially take effect until the next code cycle, the ACI 318-19 code is published and available for engineers to implement in their designs today. Thank you to Dr. John Wallace.
