Ken O'Dell, SE
President
A month ago, we were facing the scary thought of Halloween, which highlights the barreling speed at which the end of the year is approaching. With the last-minute rush of deadlines to submit before the New Year and, especially pertinent this year, the change of the code cycle to the new 2019 CBC, I hope that you see still a great holiday season before you. I sincerely hope you will begin the December season with your SEAOSC colleagues at our Annual Holiday Gathering and Dinner on the 4
th at Morton’s Steak House in Downtown LA.

Past Dinner Event Highlight - New SEAOC Blue Book
SEAOSC is happy to have hosted Ben Mohr, project manager for the 2019 SEAOC Blue Book, to present an overview of the new Blue Book. With his reoccurring plea for us to, “Please use the book,” Ben ensured that the Blue Book is here to focus on improving the engineering practice. While historically being a document providing code provisions, the new Blue Book is now the opinion, recommendation, and knowledge of us! Us being the practitioners of structural seismic design who work daily through the ins and outs of the numerous design and building code standards we adhere to as design professionals. It is Ben’s hope and the hope of the SEAOC Seismology Committee that the Blue Book continue as a living document with regular updates through supplementary articles and regular printings with input from members of the structural engineering community. The 2019 SEAOC Blue Book is available in PDF and hardcopy to all SEAOC/SEAOSC members.
