Work Performance Evaluations - Safety

What to do if you don't receive your performance evaluation on time

The procedure for this falls under the Merit Advancements section of your Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). It states that your Work Performance Evaluation shall be completed by your immediate supervisor within sixty (60) workdays prior to your step advance due date for all employees who are below the top step of their salary range. If you are a meets standard or better, you will receive your step advancement.

If no work performance evaluation is filed, or if an employee receives an overall “Unsatisfactory" or "Below Job Standards" evaluation, the employee's step advance may not be granted on the date due.

In cases where no work performance evaluation is filed and where no pending investigation is in process, an employee may contact the departmental Payroll Specialist who shall contact his/her supervisor to complete and file the work performance evaluation within ten (10) workdays. If the work performance evaluation is not completed and filed within this time frame, the employee shall submit a written request to the Human Resources Officer to direct completion of the evaluation. If the work performance evaluation is not completed and filed within fifteen (15) workdays after contacting the Human Resources Officer, the employee will be granted the step advancement.

In all cases where an employee’s work performance evaluation was not timely filed and is subsequently granted pursuant to this section, the step advancement shall be granted retroactive to the employee's step advance eligibility date.

If you were under investigation and the results were unfounded or not sustained, you will receive any step advancement that you missed retro to your step due date.

If you request your Work Performance Evaluation be completed and it is not completed in the time frame specified, contact your SEBA representative so we can begin the grievance process. For more questions, contact Labor Relations Manager Nancy Tate at (909) 885-6074 or via email at ntate@seba.biz

Should I Report My Injury? What If It Happened A While Ago?

Working while injured and delayed reporting is a common occurrence in law enforcement. Nobody wants to be the one to report an injury to a supervisor. Some of us remember the dreaded “Owie Board” and the negative connotation that went with placing your name on it.

The scenario goes something like this: Deputies respond to a call where the subject is less than cooperative. They take action to subdue, handcuff and place the subject under arrest. During the action a deputy plants a foot and twists, resulting in a popping sound and a burning sensation. The deputy transports the subject to jail and returns to the field to complete their shift. The deputy finishes the day with a limp and swollen knee. Partners ask if the deputy is okay and receive the typical, “I’m good” as a response. The deputy heads home following the end of the shift. The knee continues to swell to the point it loses range of motion and when the deputy wakes up the next morning it cannot bear weight.

What now? Report it! Report all injuries even if the injury was minor and manageable at the time or it happened some time ago.

Ideally you want to report the injury immediately as the facts, dates, times, and witnesses are fresh in your head. This documentation can save you a lot of headaches in the future should the injury progress.

Law Enforcement officers are tactical athletes and just like sport athletes; they are going to get injured. It is nothing to be embarrassed about. As they say, it is the cost of doing business.

If you have any questions regarding work-related injuries, please contact SEBA Labor Representative Melissa Burroughs at (909) 885-6074 or via email at mburroughs@seba.biz
