Financial Aid Refund Scam Targeting Hunter College Students
An email phishing scam is currently being directed at Hunter College students. The emails falsely claim that students must click on a link to confirm or process a pending financial aid refund. These messages are fraudulent and should be deleted.
What to know
- Unsolicited emails that include links requesting personal, banking, or financial information are usually malicious and designed to capture sensitive data.
-
The Office of Financial Aid and Hunter College will never request personal, banking, or verification information through unsolicited email links.
-
Official Hunter College departmental emails do not originate from “myhunter” email addresses.
If You Receive a Suspicious Email
- Do not click on any links or download attachments.
- Carefully review the sender’s email address.
- Delete the message immediately.
If you are unsure whether a refund-related message is legitimate, contact the Bursar’s Office — the official source of all refund-related information — or check your status by logging on to your CUNYfirst account.
As a reminder, you can also verify refund activity by logging into your official CUNYfirst account rather than relying on information contained in unsolicited emails.
We encourage all students to remain vigilant when reviewing emails that request sensitive information. Phishing attempts often create a sense of urgency, contain unexpected links, or request personal details. When in doubt, verify the source through official Hunter College channels before taking action.
If you clicked a link or provided information, please contact the Hunter College ICIT Help Desk at Studenthelpdesk@hunter.cuny.edu.
Hunter College remains committed to protecting the security and privacy of all students. We appreciate your vigilance in helping maintain a safe digital environment.
