In 2026, the Southern Economic Development Council reinstated its Public Policy Committee to support members on policy issues affecting economic development across the American South. To guide its work, the Committee conducted a survey in June to assess members’ legislative/policy engagement and to better understand their expectations for SEDC’s advocacy role.

SEDC has evaluated the responses and identified a clear directive for the Committee’s work. An overwhelming majority of respondents affirmed the importance of SEDC serving as a collective voice for economic development in the region, providing a strong foundation for the Council’s efforts at the federal level. Members also identified shared priorities across core economic development issues. This feedback is shaping SEDC’s approach to federal advocacy and guiding its focus on the issues and services that will best support members and champion the American South.

We have heard you, and we are taking action! Guided by members’ input, the Committee is developing a strategic, regional approach focused on shared issues and opportunities that cross state lines and transcend political agendas. Through this work, we intend to draw on SEDC’s platform and the collective leadership of our 17-state economic development community to advance federal policies that support investment, job creation, and economic growth while sustaining and strengthening the American South’s globally leading competitive position.

Throughout the remainder of the year, SEDC will keep members informed of our progress and share opportunities to help shape this important new initiative.
