IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE BUTTERNUT FIRE

From Leigh Davis of the GB Community Board

As of 11:30 am on Wednesday November 20, 2024

The fire has consumed what is estimated to be slightly less than 1100 acres as the fire had unexpected growth overnight. Also at this time the fire is more than a quarter of a mile from the nearest structures and there are not any immediate threats to the public. There have NOT been any evacuation orders at this time. We have strategically placed structural fire crews in the areas where there is the POTENTIAL for us to operate in a protection mode to protect homes and property.

In the event of a need for an evacuation order, residents will be notified through Code RED along with in person door to door notifications of the affected area – an information post will be shared on how to sign up if you are already not signed up.

This is a multi-agency effort utilizing a unified command and involving local, state and federal agencies and is involving forest in Great Barrington and Sheffield.

We have a few IMPORTANT announcements.

First – and most important. Much of the information on social media is false. Ski Butternut is not burning and there have not been any evacuations at this time – of any property. The name of the fire is the Butternut Fire – Butternut is NOT on fire.

Second – we know the smoke in town is heavier than it has been, the cooler air and “heavier” smoke does not allow the smoke to float away from the area. The town is NOT in danger.

Third – the outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming. We are beyond appreciative. Our immediate needs for those that are wishing to pitch in is for packaged food, fruit, water, and Gatorade. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept any homemade or prepared food. Both food and monetary donations can be brought to the Claire Teague Senior Center Center at 917 Main Street Great Barrington.

Lastly – Please allow us to do our work. Many want to help out, this is a very dangerous and complex operation. Please do NOT go into the woods to try and help. For safety, accountability and insurance purposes, we are not able to enlist volunteers to help with the operations.

We will posting frequently and encourage you to please share our posts and check back often.

Silent Film Comedy Classic

Take some time for yourself and laugh! Watch King Vidor's hysterical Silent Film Comedy Classic, "SHOW PEOPLE" with LIVE MUSIC ACCOMPANIMENT on Saturday, November 30, 2024 at 7pm in Dewey Hall, Sheffield, MA. This performance features internationally known silent film musician DONALD SOSIN, composer & piano, and JOANNA SEATON, vocals and percussion.

“Show People” is a lighthearted look at Hollywood at the end of the silent film era, a “movie about making movies,” directed by King Vidor. It features MARION DAVIES in her best-ever comic role of Peggy Pepper, who becomes the self-important, dramatic star, Patricia Pepoire (based on the career of silent film diva Gloria Swanson). The film is a comic romp for Davies.

WILLIAM HAINES plays the endearing Billy, and there are cameos by some of the industry’s most famous stars, including CHARLIE CHAPLIN, KING VIDOR, and DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS. A veritable menagerie of Hollywood stars is seen in the famous banquet scene.

Festival of Trees

Join a group of like-minded people. The OWLES last activity for 2024 will be a trip to Pittsfield to see the Berkshire Museum's Festival of Trees. The theme this year is Aquatica, featuring critters from lakes, the sea, and marshes. The date: Wednesday, December 18. Admission to the Museum for seniors is $12, though you may be able to get passes from your local library for 1/2 price. After we spend time at the exhibit, we will stop at Antimony Brewpub on Rte. 7 in Lenox for lunch. OWLES trips are open to all seniors in the congregation and their friends, and we welcome new attendees.

Please contact Nancy King, Liz Wells or email the church office if you would like to attend.

There's a sign-up clipboard on the round table in the Parish Hall. Please let us know what you are bringing for the Christmas Bake Sale.

Let God be God

The Bible study group will meet next on Friday, December 6 at 1 pm in the Parish hall. We will continue the study on the Gospel of Luke from the Books of Faith series. This is the Gospel we'll be following starting in Advent. This next lesson focuses on Luke 4:14-30. The theme is 'Let God be God'. If you want to include reading as much of Luke over the course of the series, you can read from Luke Ch 2 verse 41 through Ch 4 verse 30.

Please let Imelda Muller or the church office know if you are coming.

Our planet Earth

Taking small steps to reduce the environmental impact we are having on our planet is very important to us. For that reason, we are asking that no more plastic cutlery or styrofoam cups or containers be brought into the church. We are moving toward more sustainable practices here at Christ Trinity Church. In the meantime, we will be using up the plasticware that we already have in the undercroft. Other small measures are also being introduced here that will reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Thank you for supporting us in this effort.
