President's Message
Dear Friends of SEF,

It is a very busy time at the Foundation right now, our first annual Art Exhibition is just around the corner and we continue to work on Grants and our Annual Campaign---all to support the students of SGUSD. It would be great if the change in calendar brought a clean slate with it. But... no. Far from it, in fact many of the challenges that confronted us throughout 2020 are here to stay in 2021. As tempting as it would be to pretend everything will soon be "normal," that's also unlikely.

My challenge today is to take a proactive approach in planning for the rest of this year NOW in order to achieve even greater things in 2021. The new year is upon us... there's no better time to participate by releasing generosity to SEF! Your donations allow us to continue our commitment to the support of academic excellence providing new and continued educational resources as well as innovative learning opportunities for all SGUSD students each and every day.  I invite you to join me and the SEF Board in supporting our efforts.

First, Your Donation MattersOur Annual Giving  campaign, which runs each year from  July 1 - June 30 helps support programs that impact the lives of students, teachers and resources in our schools. If you have not yet made your Champion of Education gift for 2020/21 yet, please
give online today! The reality is that public schools do indeed need private funding and your investment in the foundation will help us grow our mission in support of the 4700 students we serve grades TK-12. We thank YOU for your support!

Secondly, learn more about the foundation's upcoming community wide art project, Dream. Create. Imagine. This  current academic year, SEF is hosting a district wide arts project where we will invite students to develop and submit their print media artwork to our organization for inclusion in a virtual arts festival. Additionally, from the submissions themselves 20 pieces will be randomly chosen to be developed by the foundation into pole banners and hung within the Mission District in the City. We are so grateful to the City for partnering with us on this project.  This is an especially exciting year as we will be able to expand on the district's first annual Arts Week happening in March.

Lastly, with a focus on lifelong learning, the month of February brings many opportunities for us to commemorate and celebrate the lives of our Presidents, Black History month and the cultural celebration of Chinese New Year. As you consider the ways you'll recognize, honor and celebrate we hope you will take some time this month and beyond to visit the public library where you will find books and resources that will support and inspire your learning.

We have so many reasons to thank you for your gifts of generosity. The charitableness of our community allows us to fulfill our mission of offering unique experiences inside and outside of the classroom.  Understanding we can only continue to grow with increased involvement from our community, I thank you for sharing my commitment to SEF's mission. I am so grateful for your patience and resiliency and your indelible passion for youth education.  I am excited for what lies ahead, and I am humbled and honored to be on this journey with all of you. Thank you for the opportunity to continue serving you.

We can make a difference,
Alison DeVriendt
SEF President 2020-2021

SEF Believes Physical Activity Improves Mental Health!

SEF believes that every person in San Gabriel has the right to enjoy health and wellness and as such we place great value in the mental, physical and social health of our community.

Recently, we partnered with Pound instructor AJ King to bring her amazing Pound class to SGUSD teachers, and our community. She designed a full body workout perfect for letting loose, toning up and letting out stress. As one participant noted, "Last night was the best sleep I have had during the pandemic. I fell asleep without the restlessness of I can't fall asleep. I was so relaxed afterward and all my tension from work was gone". Thank you AJ for sharing your amazing energy with us!!
