President's Message
Dear Friends of SEF,

I cannot believe school is "officially" out and summer is finally upon us.  Congratulations to all our graduates from our 5th grade and 8th grade classes as well as our graduating high school seniors.  We are all so proud of you!

Let us not kid ourselves, the past two-plus months of distance learning with our children have been a challenge. After all, most of us have no professional teacher training. And working with our own children can bring back some less-than-pleasant memories - like the time that Mom decided that she was going to teach you how to drive, or when Dad attempted to help with algebra.

We hope you and your loved ones are safe and healthy during the rapidly unfolding events both in our nation and globally. As a community, it is especially important during these trying times; that we reach out to each other, understand each other, take care of each other; and share our stories with each other. I am so moved by the continued dynamic leadership and guidance of the all-volunteer board members and how each continues to play a key role in the success of the organization both in terms of governance and support. All board members recognize and understand the responsibility and privilege they hold serving our community-based organization and do so with pride and integrity throughout their tenure. In terms of time, talent and treasure, we are grateful for each member's unique and valued set of attributes dedicated selflessly towards the foundation's educational mission of enriching the lives' of every grade K-12 student in all San Gabriel public schools.

The success of SEF depends on the strength of its partnerships and community support for all stakeholders. As we continue to strive to build a diverse board representative of the community within which we serve, I hope that you will join us in our efforts to strengthen our resources, our schools and our community from within. Please take a moment to complete this short survey. Your feedback will help us continually improve and guide the direction of the foundation.  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZHPY92C

Lastly, our 2019-2020 Annual Fund Campaign is ending on June 30th and your assistance in our efforts is needed now more than ever. I am humbly asking for your financial support to help us close out this year's campaign strong! Please give as your heart leads you....your gift today large and small will help ensure we can continue to make an impact for our students in the 2020-2021 academic year. Please click here to make a tax-deductible gift today!

Please don't stop there...contact me via email at: sefboardpresident@gmail.com to let me know how you would like to serve our students and our community.  Please continue to be safe, focus on family and know that our community will rebuild stronger than ever before. On behalf of the over 5,000 students we serve....thank you!

Kindly,
Alison DeVriendt

SEF Awarded $10,000 from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts
SEF is incredibly honored to be chosen as a $10,000 grant award recipient from PSHA this year. The grant has been awarded in support of Music Matters ~ Access for All! which will be used to augm ent the current inventory of Orff mallet instruments in the elementary schools. Additionally, musical instruments will be purchased for use in the middle and high school programs. The generous investment in our organization will allow us to provide instruments that will help the district in their efforts to enable equity and access for all.
"We are honored that the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts has selected SEF as one of its grant recipients," stated SEF Board President, Alison DeVriendt. "The donation will assist us in our efforts to provide educational opportunities, resources and assistance for the students in our public schools, and will help suppo rt our long term goal of bridging and closing the achievement gap amongst our school district's students. We are grateful to the PSHA for their partnership and commitment to helping the students in our community."
Each year, PSHA awards gifts and grants to a broad and diverse list of non profit organizations, like SEF, to support their efforts in the community. Since 1948, gifts and grants have awarded more than 21 million dollars in support of music education at all levels.
Funds distributed are raised annually through the Pasadena Showcase House of Design, which is one of the oldest, largest and most successful home and garden  tours in the country. This year's magnificent event is being held June 7 - June 28. You can receive $5 off your ticket price through the use of the code GIFTSGRANTS during your online ticket purchase.
We are extremely grateful to PSHA for their investment in the mission of SEF and the students of the San Gabriel Unified School District. Thank YOU for your support of Music Matters!
Why SEF Matters - Understanding Impact in the Community ~ The One Thing!

1. Why do you support SEF?
I've always supported SEF because they have continued give back to the San Gabriel community. SEF's main priority is to offer our students enrichment. It may look different at various grade levels. It can be providing an extra teacher for art or cooking class. It could be purchasing recorders for our entire group of 4th grade students. It can be providing outfits for the arts program at the high school. Guest authors would often visit school our multiple school sites share their craft and personal stories. SEF continues to raise funds for the sole purpose of supporting our own students. That's an excellent cause we can all stand behind.

2.   In your opinion, what is the One Thing that SEF does that enriches students lives?
SEF contributes to what we call  "the San Gabriel Experience." They add some sparkle to the children's lives. They allow kids to participate in programs they might not have access to. The SEF Summer Enrichment program, for example, was something I was able to personally be a part of for several years. I was Admin for both campuses elementary and middle school. They offered classes in robotics, debate, cooking, art, math, video game design, etc. Every year, we listened to feedback, looked for classes that would gain student interest, and worked diligently to make it a bigger and more improved program. That is the one thing I was happy to take part in.

1. Why do you support SEF?
SEF stands out among the many schools and educational foundations I work with nationwide for its energetic commitment to enriching its students' lives and learning experiences. SEF does the most work, gives the most back to children, and finds creative solutions to any barrier. San Gabriel students may not realize how lucky they are to have SEF in their corner.

2.  In your opinion, what is the One Thing that SEF does that enriches students lives?
I can't help but love how hard SEF works to put books in kids' hands. It's been wonderful to see their enthusiasm for getting kids reading and writing, and their generosity in supplying books to classrooms and to kids who might not otherwise be able to afford them.
