President's Message
Dear Friends of SEF,

Welcome fall! The season of change and gratitude is finally upon us. The past few months have been filled with uncertain times for everyone in our community and my job as President of the San Gabriel Educational Foundation has surely proven to shoulder some of the same weight. I have been wrapped up within a whirlwind of activity for which I am grateful. Through countless virtual meetings, that have all proven to be enlightening and energizing for me, I have enjoyed meeting an abundance of new people. It has been wonderfully inspirational to see many passionate individuals share their creative and innovative thoughts to help drive the direction of all that we do and has provided a special way for us to feel connected to one another.

As you know, there is a monumental change in educational expectations, delivery and practice. SEF is working hard to meet the emerging and critical needs of students and teachers, who are facing unprecedented challenges. Our primary mission is simple: provide financial support to the San Gabriel public schools. Our continued success depends entirely upon the partnerships of volunteers and donors, like you, who generously give their time and money to support our mission.  As we continue to move forward we will continue to highlight needs in our school community and strive to provide tips, tools and support to everyone learning and working from home.

Additionally, our focus this year is to keep parents and community members involved more than ever. Join us! We are in need of wider representation and perspectives. In addition to sharing your voice we have opportunities for those of you who would like to participate in every level of operational capacity from event planning to fundraising and beyond. Volunteer opportunities are open to parents, family members, grandparents, friends, teachers, anyone who would like to support SEF, the students and the schools. We invite you to volunteer for a day, an event, or as a board member...please contact us to learn more about the volunteer position waiting for you.

Lastly, SEFs 2020 Giving Challenge is going strong! Please join us in our efforts by making your $20 donation to SEF! (click here to donate today). Our annual fund campaign is completely voluntary and your donation is tax-deductible. Your support now is as important as ever to ensure that we can continue to fulfill our mission.

For our community, I am confident that when we all return together in person, we will realize a greater sense of belonging and a renewed perspective on all of the values that make San Gabriel such an incredibly special place for our families.

Together we will continue to move forward. Together we will thrive. Together we will make a difference!

Be safe and be strong,
Alison DeVriendt
SEF President 2020-2021

Why SEF Matters - Understanding Impact in the Community ~ The One Thing!

Denise Menchaca
Mayor of San Gabriel
1. Why do you support SEF?
As a former School Board member and parent in the District, I understand personally the positive impact SEF has on every student and teacher in some manner. The Foundation helps by (a) giving teachers additional resources so they can innovate and expand learning in their classrooms and (b) offering parent workshops to benefit students academically, socially and emotionally. Because a strong local school district makes for a strong community, SEF continues to earn the support from all stakeholders in their annual fundraising efforts.

2.  In your opinion, what is the One Thing that SEF does that enriches students lives?
Every year, SEF seeks volunteers to make phone calls to every school family in the District to ask for financial support.  These calls are made in multiple languages to ensure that everyone is included.  No matter how large or small the monetary pledges are, families can play a part in providing an excellent and equitable public education.  Thanks to SEF, we are all working together for a common cause on behalf of the students enrolled in our 8 schools.

We continue our 2020 Giving Challenge and this is how YOU can help! All you need to do is visit the SEF website at
seffor8schools.org to make your tax-deductible donation of $20 or more today. If collectively a $20 donation is received on behalf of each K-12 student in the district...there would be over $100,000 worth of funding received!  How great would that be?!
