SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL LEARNING
The MBUSD Social & Emotional Visual Framework serves to remind us of the life skills we want to foster in our students both at school and at home. Throughout the year, everyone in grades Preschool-12+ will focus on the same SEL skills.
November-December SEL Focus
I show empathy for others.
Showing Empathy for Others
  • Taking others' perspectives into consideration
  • Recognizing strengths in others
  • Demonstrating empathy and compassion
  • Showing concern for the feelings of others
  • Understanding and expressing gratitude

Grand View
SEL Initiatives at Grand View include building relationships and empathy through a school wide buddy system. Gators are buddied up across and within grade levels: 5th graders with Kindergarteners, 2nd graders with 4th graders, and 3rd grade has a same grade buddy.

Gators participated in the Grand View Cares: United Against Hate Chalk Event. See photos below!

Meadows
No Place for Hate
The No Place for Hate committee met for the first time. Here is a picture of a breakout group led by Mrs. Krzmarzick where students explored the concept of identity. The discussion was framed by asking students to think about an iceberg. Some features are visible above the surface, but not the ones below the surface. Students discussed how we identify ourselves isn't always visible to others and shared examples with one another.
Red Ribbon Week
The focus was all about being healthy. Along with some wonderful helpers, the SEL team hosted their 2nd "Salute to Fruit" giveaway.
Better Together
Meadows' PTA theme and focus is on positivity. They have added inspirational quotes on the outside of classroom doors, colorful murals painted in student bathrooms, and buildings are named with Mindful vocabulary/messages.
Pacific
Pacific students are filled with Panther P.R.I.D.E. (Positive, Respectful, Inclusive, Dependable, and Engaged)! Peter Reynolds came to Pacific to meet with all kinder through second grade students to discuss his new book “Our Table." This is a story of multigenerational love, tradition and family coming together with gratitude and thanks.

Below you can see Pacific's banner showing “Welcome to our Pacific Table” with the author and all of K-2 teachers.

Pennekamp
United Against Hate
Fifth grade students who may have missed out at the chalk event at Polliwog Park on Sunday, November 14, 2021 were able to take part in heartwarming fun the Thursday before Thanksgiving break!

At their lunch recess, all 5th graders were welcome to help color in the heart mosaic to celebrate kindness. Pennekamp student Brooklyn Chan gave an incredible speech at Polliwog, which you can watch here.
Building Connections through Board Games
4th grade students are invited to play board games at recess one time per week. This is being facilitated by 4th grade teacher Mrs. Hart and some 5th grade ambassadors.
Global Gamers
Pennekamp has rolled out lunchtime games from around the world to 2nd and 4th graders. Games include Trompo, Capirucho and Daruma Otoshi. Students have been learning new game rules as well as geography, language and culture.
Robinson
A Story Walk was created to promote gratitude at Robinson. Our students read an important "Did You Know" (DYK): Gratitude is a powerful human emotion! Research shows that a key part of building empathy is having gratitude.

Robinson hosted a special spirit day called "R U OK Day" which involves kids checking in on each other.
MBMS
MBMS New Student Lunch
ASB hosted a New Student Lunch this fall. They set up games, balls, cards, and snacks to facilitate a fun lunch gathering. Their goal was to provide a safe space for new students to hang out, connect, and make new friends. It was a huge success!
MBMS Visit with
K9 Meredith!
Meredith, the Redondo Beach K9 Community Service dog, visited MBMS on September 24th for a Fun Friday lunch. Students were invited to visit Meredith, pet her, and show her some love!
MCHS

The wellness center was created, worked on over the summer, and opened in early October. It is fantastic to see Costa students utilizing this fabulous space!
The first SEL assembly (in class) for all students was on September 22 and the theme was Connections!

Mustangs Expect Respect launched-students are being rewarded for positive behavior and can use their rewards in the Student Store.

SEL Videos were created by the committee for the monthly assembly and the Hispanic Heritage Assemblies.

The SEL committee teamed up on the Latino Scholars Union to produce the Hispanic Heritage Assembly last week included outdoor music, art, games and empanadas!
