Video: Congressional Briefing on Teacher Preparation and SEL
On Wed., Feb. 27, CASEL and Committee for Children hosted a Congressional briefing that highlighted the need to integrate SEL into teacher preparation programs. Most do not sufficiently prepare teachers to understand and model the social-emotional competencies students need. Researchers and practitioners offered recommendations for how policymakers can address this training gap. More information here .

Tool: SEL Playbook to Support Practitioners
This resource provides activities for introducing and broadening the use of three signature SEL practices in classrooms, schools, and workplaces. The playbook addresses welcoming inclusion activities, engaging strategies, and optimistic closures to help practitioners create safe, productive spaces for students and adults.

Twitter Chat: Day of Learning on the International Day of Happiness, March 20 at 9 a.m. ET
To support its efforts to expand opportunities for teens to develop SEL competencies, LG has announced a Day of Learning focused on the Science of Happiness and six Sustainable Happiness Skills, hosted in partnership with Discovery Education. Join the Twitter chat that will bring together LG partners and experts from UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center to highlight the importance of happiness, how happiness impacts the brain, and resources to get teens involved. 
National Commission: The Sun Is Setting
The National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development officially ended its work on March 15, 2019. NationAtHope.org will continue to host the final report and additional Commission resources. A number of Commission partners will advance the Commission's recommendations including Learning Policy Institute, Forum for Youth Investment, and CASEL. Afterschool Programs: Report and Companion Guide
The Wallace Foundation released a new report that reviews evaluations of afterschool programs to determine if any meet research requirements of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The report reviewed over 600 evaluations, and 62 programs met the top three tiers of ESSA research requirements and also demonstrated positive impacts on students. Also available is a companion guide that provides detailed research summaries that help make decisions about afterschool programming in your community
