Many were on hand to congratulate our Chairman and CEO including Mayor Kenney, W. Wilson Goode, Jr., Muriel Goode-Trufant, Mrs. Goode, members of City Council, SELF President & COO Mike Hinson, community members, civic leaders, members of the clergy. and a host of friends.

William Willis Named SELF Employee of the Month

SELF, Inc. Management Team along with other Team Members named William Willis as Employee of the Month for August 2018. William has worked for SELF, Inc. for 17 plus years and currently works as a Residential Aide Supervisor at the Safe Haven Program .

WAY TO GO!!!



SELF, Inc. along with our UAC Homeless Providers Consortium partners Center for Hope and ODAAT were awarded a Home4Good grant to serve medically fragile participants within our programs. We are pleased to share this grant that will improve our capacity to serve our participants with chronic health conditions and other medical challenges. Home4Good is a grant through FHL Bank, based in Pittsburgh, PA.
SELF-Community Advisory Board
SELF, Inc. has a notable history of positively affecting the lives of many people in our community. Since its creation, SELF has been committed to understanding the diverse and changing needs of the communities we serve.

The new SELF Community Advisory Board will help facilitate new interest and initiatives for the organization and our services. The SELF Community Advisory Board, or S-CAB, will play an integral role in offering advice and suggestions on current and future programs offered by the organization, as well as act as ambassadors to the community on behalf of the organization. The S-CAB will consist of current and former participants of SELF programs as members.

Thank you and welcome new S-CAB members: Marcey Canalichio, Dennis Enoch, William Glover, Reuben Montijo, Bonita Pritchette, Erik Steadman, and Anthony Upchurch.

SELF Participates in Free Library's Job Fair

SELF's Yvette Hawthorne and Donna Moore met with potential team members at a Free Library of Philadelphia Job Fair on October 24. The job fair was hosted by the  Regional Foundation Center (RFC), a nonprofit resource center at the Free Library that has been serving Philadelphia's nonprofit community for over 40 years. Currently, SELF has the following positions available: Winter Initiative Residential Aide, Residential Aide, Utility Worker/Driver, Maintenance Supervisor, Peer Outreach Support Counselor, Case Manager, and Food Service Supervisor. First Step Staffing Returns to Outley House
First Step Staffing worked with Outley House participants on October 25, to help them find employment. First Step is a non-profit staffing agency dedicated to securing sustainable income for individuals transitioning from homelessness. They also serve individuals with criminal backgrounds, veterans, and those with other barriers to employment.
First Steps offers paid, entry-level jobs in light industrial settings in and around Philadelphia and New Jersey often providing transportation assistance to and from work for participants.


Local Church Members Make an Impact at Susquehanna House



Jesus Name Apostolic Church donated 42 bags to Susquehanna participants. The bags were stuffed to the brim with footie socks, a tooth brush and toothpaste, soap, a washcloth, hand sanitizer, wipes and a Chapstick. Sisters from the church met with our participants and said a prayer.

Thank you so much to the Jesus Name Apostolic Church and especially to Ms. Sandora for visiting on October 14. It made our day.

SELF Participants from Richard Jones Recovery House Take Part in the Recovery Walk

SELF participants from Richard Jones Recovery House participated in the annual Recovery Walk! at Pe nn's Landing on October 22 in support of those who are in recovery from substances. The walk offered an opportunity to bring awareness to mental health and substance use resources in the community. It also aims to remove the stigma associated with seeking support for these issues.

Outley House and Health Partners Partnership Presents Professional Development Workshop Series
Health Partners hosted a professional development workshop series at Outley House, a component in our ongoing partnership with the HMO. The series began on Sept. 19 with Resume Building. On Oct. 3, participants learned the Do’s and Don’ts of Interviewing and on Oct. 17, the series concluded with Confident Communication. All workshops were an hour long and participants walked away with a wealth of additional job seeking skills. Job skills training is an important step on the road to self-sufficiency. With marketable skills, our participants increase their chances of gaining sustainable employment.

We will unveil our newest business collaborative initiative, COUNTERACTANTS. You will hear from our participants, Rev. Dr. W. Wilson Goode, Sr, and our inaugural COUNTERACTANT Hamid Mobsoute. Most importantly you will hear about how you can support SELF and our participants recovering from homelessness.
