Being successful in a STEM career is not only about having strong technical knowledge, but also requires having good professional skills. This past Friday, the STEMworks
™
interns learned how to negotiate their pay and how to improve productivity.

Speed, Comprehension, and Retention!
Reading faster and remembering more can boost your productivity! Paul Nowak, founder of
Iris Reading
, emphasized that the key parts to boost your productivity is practicing your speed, comprehension, and retention.
To improve your speed, you want to go through speed drills. With speed drills, you want to purposely read faster by moving your eyes faster. The goal with these drills is to see words faster. STEMworks
™
interns were given an article and tasked to read as much as they can in a minute. They were then tasked to read the same article but to try and get to the same spot they stopped at in thirty seconds. After these exercises, they were pleased to see that their reading speed improved.
There are times when we go through an article or passage, and don’t understand what we’re reading. To better comprehend what you’re reading, slow down at the beginning of each paragraph and then speed up.
Many high school students are preparing for test such as the SAT and ACT. For the reading portion, Paul advises students to read the first sentence of each paragraph, then all the questions, and lastly the passage. Reading the first sentence of each paragraph gives you the main idea of the passage and once you start reading the whole passage, you have a better understanding of what its about.
Want to improve your reading speed? Use the
AccelaReader
which will flash words on the screen at different speeds!

Talking about how much you’re earning is always a sensitive subject, sometimes we’re not earning how much we’re actually worth. Sean Leslie, a senior content strategist at
PayScale
, emphasized that it’s okay to negotiate your pay. You do not have to always accept what is being offered to you; you can negotiate for a higher pay, for better insurance, and more vacation time. When negotiating, be prepared with data, research the organization, how they’re doing, find out how much people in your position are making. Don’t undervalue yourself! Studies show that 75% of the people who do negotiate, end up getting a higher salary.
It is also important to know that in some states, it is illegal for employers to ask how much you made in your previous position.
If you are asked this question, one way to answer without providing your previous salary is by stating that your past salary should not influence your future salary.
