SEMAC is launching an Emergency Relief Fund (ERF) designed to provide rapid, short-term assistance for individual artists and culture bearers facing unexpected hardship. The funds are meant to help stabilize recipients so they can keep creating. Through a random selection process, SEMAC will make one-time gifts of $500 each to 60 creatives living in the 11-county region, including Prairie Island Indian Community, 20 per selection round.
All submissions received by May 19 will be included in the pool for selection round one with notification on May 29. The submission deadline for round two is July 7 and the deadline for round three is September 15. Applications that are not selected in a round will be carried over into the next selection round.
SEMAC and Minnesota’s other regional arts councils form the Artists Emergency Relief Fund Network, which is stewarded by Springboard for the Arts and supported in part by the F.R. Bigelow Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, the McKnight Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation.

| | Strategic Planning Meeting in Review | | Dr. Matt Hillmann facilitating SEMAC's strategic planning meeting March 25, 2026 in Rochester, MN | | |
To prepare for SEMAC's 50th anniversary in the fall of 2027, the Board and staff will be rewriting our mission, vision, and values. Thank you to everyone who responded to a survey sent out earlier this year to kick off the process! In the survey we sought feedback on our current language, asking what resonated and what modifications would strengthen the statements.
The next step was an in-person meeting on March 25 with more than 20 invited participants from throughout the SEMAC region who also represented a range of creative practices and perspectives. At this meeting, which was facilitated by Dr. Matt Hillmann, superintendent of Northfield Public Schools, we shared the survey results and dove deeper into the work of reimagining words and phrases to describe the future of SEMAC.
This group's input will now be shared with the Board at our June retreat where Dr. Hillmann will lead a brainstorming session to develop new mission, vision, and values statements that SEMAC will use to guide our work into the next 50 years!
Look for updates in an upcoming e-newsletter!
