Hello SEMC!

September is here, and SEMC2026 is right around the corner! SEMC President Dr. Calinda Lee, incoming President Ahmad Ward, and the entire Council and staff are looking forward to welcoming you to Winston-Salem as we gather to celebrate SEMC’s 75th anniversary.

Our program and event teams are deep in the final details, and we have a few things to share as you make your plans - two Know Before You Go sessions next week, a unique opportunity at Old Salem, and a chance to add your voice to an important conversation happening across the museum field.

If you have not registered for SEMC2026 yet, there is still time to join us. We hope to see you in Winston-Salem!

Sincerely,

Zinnia Willits

Unique SEMC2026 Experience

Spend a Night with the Slave Dwelling Project at Old Salem

SEMC2026 attendees have a unique opportunity to participate in an overnight experience with the Slave Dwelling Project at Old Salem Museums & Gardens on Monday, September 28.

This immersive experience offers participants a rare opportunity to engage with history in the extraordinary setting of Old Salem during the SEMC Annual Meeting.

Participation is limited to just 20 people, so advance registration is required.

Holding The Line: Add Your Voice

At AAAM2026 in Philadelphia, SEMC Executive Director, Zinnia Willits, had the opportunity to serve as a table leader for Navigating Change: Holding the Line, a conversation exploring what museum professionals are being asked to navigate, protect, and sustain in a period of significant change.

The conversation is now expanding beyond the room, and we would love to see voices from across the SEMC community represented.

Museum professionals are invited to complete a brief survey exploring ethical leadership, shared accountability, and the challenges and opportunities facing our institutions and our profession. Responses will help identify common themes and experiences that can inform continued conversations and support for the field.

The survey closes September 11.
