Bearing One Another’s Burdens:
A Call to Mental Wellness
Each January, as the new year’s calendar turns and the days grow quieter, the Church
is given a sacred opportunity to speak hope into a season when many carry unseen
burdens. Mental Wellness Month invites us to acknowledge a truth woven throughout
Scripture. For many individuals and families, brokenheartedness and fatigue are not
abstract ideas.
At Samaritas, this holistic understanding of care is central to our mission of serving
people as an expression of the love of Christ. Through behavioral health services,
addiction recovery support, and crisis care, Samaritas walks alongside individuals who
are seeking stability, healing, and renewed hope. These services are grounded in the
conviction that seeking help is not a sign of weak faith, but an act of courage and trust in
God’s provision through community.

For pastors and congregations, January’s behavior health observations can take many
forms. It may begin in worship with prayers that acknowledge the real struggles of
mental wellness, lifting those who wrestle with invisible burdens. It may include adult
education sessions that integrate theological reflection with practical insights into mental
health supports. It may involve partnering with organizations like Samaritas to share
resources or host conversations that reduce stigma.
Jesus’ own ministry reveals God’s heart for restoration. He says, “Come to me, all
you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest” (Matthew
11:28, NRSV). That promise is still alive today, often made tangible through
communities that reflect Christ’s care.
In embracing Mental Wellness Month, we do more than raise awareness; we embody
the incarnational love of Christ and affirm that each person’s mental well-being is
sacred. As we move into a new year together, let us lean into this calling with courage,
compassion, and an unshakeable trust in God’s promise of healing.
May our communities become spaces where every individual feels supported in their
struggle, encouraged in their growth, and embraced as a beloved child of God.
