‼️Annual Report Reminders

Each year, we invite our rostered ministers, active and retired, to share their annual reports with the synod. These reports help us stay connected to one another and give thanks for the many ways ministry is unfolding across our synod.

In addition, congregations are asked to submit their annual congregational reports to the ELCA. These reports are an important way we tell the story of the church together and ensure our shared ministry is accurately reflected. *NEW Online Filing* Your congregation should have received an email on January 22 informing you that the online system is available AND a letter from Secretary Mills with your login information. If you would like to file online and do not have the congregation ID and password, please email b.fisher@semisynod.com and we will send credentials your way.

Thank you for taking the time to complete and submit these reports! Your care and attention help strengthen our connections and support the life of the church we share and love.

Ways to help in Minneapolis as ICE raids continue

  • The AMMPARO Working Group at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (ELCA) in the heart of Minneapolis works with unaccompanied minor migrants in the community for legal appointments and basic physical, educational, and emotional-social needs. Donations can be directed to their website (please select "Immigration Justice"): https://htlcmpls.org/donate/donate-online/
  •  The Minneapolis Area Synod (ELCA) has a Welcome Fund providing direct financial support to immigrants in the area. A fuller campaign will be launched in February. Please see this link: https://mpls-synod.org/news/announcing-the-welcome-fund/

Stewardship for All Seasons is a year-long cohort experience that helps congregations lead a healthier annual stewardship appeal—one rooted in mission, gratitude, and trust rather than shame or obligation. Through guided coaching and practical tools, congregations learn how to write and time encouraging, honest messages that grow generosity step by step. Participating churches often experience 10–20% or more growth in annual giving, along with renewed energy and confidence in stewardship leadership.

Mental Health Support During Disruptive Times

When chaos and worry seem overwhelming, you don’t have to face it alone. Portico members with ELCA-Primary health benefits, your EAP can help you navigate anxiety, uncertainty, and emotional strain tied to current events. Want a quick visual reminder? Print this Spring Health resource for practical ways to stay grounded and supported.

Notify Portico of Any Compensation Changes

To administer benefits accurately, Portico needs to know each member’s current compensation amount. If your congregation’s annual meeting included a salary or benefit adjustment, be sure your EmployerLink user notifies Portico within 60 days of the effective date of that change. Late notifications of compensation changes can impact your sponsored members’ retirement account contributions as well as disability and life insurance benefits. This year, note that EmployerLink users will be asked to verify FICA (for lay employees) or SECA (for most clergy) status as part of the SECURE 2.0 Roth catch-up provision.

Online Retirement Readiness Series

Winter weather got you homebound? Take a break from your Netflix queue to bolster your

financial knowledge. Portico has worked with Fidelity to offer a virtual Retirement Readiness workshop series designed to help individuals think confidently about their financial future. Topics include Social Security, retirement savings strategies, health care costs in retirement, and protecting personal information online. Find videos on the Retirement Readiness series page on myPortico.

Get Ready for Tax Season

Since congregations and clergy have unique reporting requirements, Portico offers

complimentary access to two important resources:

1. The Clergy Tax Return Preparation Guide by Richard R. Hammar focuses on tax-

related topics most relevant to ministers.

2. Federal Reporting Requirements for Churches helps congregations understand

their federal tax-reporting requirements.

Both tax guides are available on myPortico and the Tax Filing Information tab on EmployerLink.

Bearing One Another’s Burdens:

A Call to Mental Wellness

Each January, as the new year’s calendar turns and the days grow quieter, the Church

is given a sacred opportunity to speak hope into a season when many carry unseen

burdens. Mental Wellness Month invites us to acknowledge a truth woven throughout

Scripture. For many individuals and families, brokenheartedness and fatigue are not

abstract ideas.

At Samaritas, this holistic understanding of care is central to our mission of serving

people as an expression of the love of Christ. Through behavioral health services,

addiction recovery support, and crisis care, Samaritas walks alongside individuals who

are seeking stability, healing, and renewed hope. These services are grounded in the

conviction that seeking help is not a sign of weak faith, but an act of courage and trust in

God’s provision through community.

Breaking the Addiction Cycle: Watch Christina's Journey of Loss, Healing & Hope: https://youtu.be/iJaghqIC_3g?si=_zPwYH9wiQF7dX8r

For pastors and congregations, January’s behavior health observations can take many

forms. It may begin in worship with prayers that acknowledge the real struggles of

mental wellness, lifting those who wrestle with invisible burdens. It may include adult

education sessions that integrate theological reflection with practical insights into mental

health supports. It may involve partnering with organizations like Samaritas to share

resources or host conversations that reduce stigma.

Jesus’ own ministry reveals God’s heart for restoration. He says, “Come to me, all

you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest” (Matthew

11:28, NRSV). That promise is still alive today, often made tangible through

communities that reflect Christ’s care.

In embracing Mental Wellness Month, we do more than raise awareness; we embody

the incarnational love of Christ and affirm that each person’s mental well-being is

sacred. As we move into a new year together, let us lean into this calling with courage,

compassion, and an unshakeable trust in God’s promise of healing.

May our communities become spaces where every individual feels supported in their

struggle, encouraged in their growth, and embraced as a beloved child of God.

WELCA Gathering: Join us at the 2026 Gathering in Des Moines, Iowa!

July 16-19, 2026

The theme for the 2026 Triennial Gathering is “I Am Worthy,” based on Psalm 139:14: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” This statement serves as a reminder of God’s promise to be with us, even in times of devastation and division. By repeating the phrase “I am worthy,” we can recognize the Holy Spirit’s ongoing work in our lives.

Neighbors helping neighbors after a house fire

Pastor Matt Jewel, St. John's, Capac, writes: "on Sunday, January 18, the house right next to St. John's burned down. The family aren't members themselves, but we have members who are related to or connected with them. It was an emotional morning for my congregation. The owner is a single mom with two kids and no insurance on the house. She also lost her car and all of the possessions inside her home. Our St. John's family is holding a noisy offering for the family next Sunday, January 25. Here's the link to the GoFundMe if others would like to make a donation: https://www.gofundme.com/f/eurkps-help-my-sister-rebuild-after-devastating-fire

Synod Office Update:

Many of you have been guests in our not-so-new office suite at the Cathedral of St. Paul on Woodward & E. Warren in Detroit. We are comfortably settled in and look forward to greeting you in the future. Last Spring, the building management eliminated its front desk / receptionist coverage. Now rather than entering the lobby and seeing a face, visitors should call our office (313-821-1055) from the parking lot to gain entry to the building. Let us know in advance that you're headed our way to ensure someone is available for you.

Synod Prayers

May God continue to hold our children in God's loving hands. Remember the following people and congregations as we pray for those who celebrate, who mourn, who are ill, and our ministries that are thriving or ending.
