Dear Wrightsville Beach Community,

Your feedback is needed! Please take just a few minutes to complete the Hazard Mitigation Public Survey to help guide future planning for Southeastern North Carolina: Take the Survey Here.

This is one of the most important ways you can directly influence how our community prepares for and reduces the impacts of natural and man-made hazards.

What is Hazard Mitigation?

Hazard mitigation involves any sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to human life and property from natural and man-made hazards.

Why it Matters:

ESP Associates is currently working with North Carolina Emergency Management (NCEM) to update the Southeastern NC Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. This plan, last updated in 2021, is critical for maintaining eligibility for various FEMA hazard mitigation funding programs, both pre-disaster and post-disaster.

The 2025 update process is officially underway for all participating counties and their municipalities, including Onslow, Pender, New Hanover, and Brunswick Counties. This effort aims to increase community resilience, adapt to evolving risks, and promote long-term safety and preparedness.

Mitigation efforts fall into six primary categories:

  • Prevention
  • Property Protection
  • Natural Resource Protection
  • Structural Projects
  • Emergency Services
  • Education and Awareness

These actions focus on both protecting existing development and reducing vulnerability in future development.

The existing 2021 plan, official FEMA and NCEM guidance, and more Key Resources can be found on the project website.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more about how you can participate in developing the updated plan, please contact:
